Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

I know, right? Pure evil. It's affraid of everyone but me. It won't eat for anyone but me. And he fits right into the crook of my arm. He is sweet and behaves. Tinkled outside. He may have started just before I set him down but that's what washers are for. He breathes heavy and fast and pants a lot. I've never had a puppy. I hope that's normal. And he is the most beautiful puppy I have ever seen. I hope he doesn't like chicken.
LOL,........................I don't think anyone on this thread is surprised he came knocking on your door Deanna..................
He is simply beautiful.............

Well, I caught my broody off her nest getting some food & water. This is day 19 what the heck?! She's suppose to be on lockdown. :-/

Looks like I may have to order a few chicks :( who's selling this time of year?! No one local

Humidity started dropping in my incubator again last night, so today it was time to pop it open and add some water. Candled while I was at it. Day 15 candling is much less interesting than day 9 candling was. On day 9 I could clearly see little heartbeats going a mile a minute and it was really cool. On day 15, it's mostly just a big black blob with some veining and every now and then it jiggles a little.

Also, it seems to me that I can see more detail when I candle the small end rather than the large end. Candling the large end I can see a very well defined air sac, but nothing else. Candling the small end, I can't see the air sac but I do get to see veining and the outlines of the baby-chick-blob as it moves - that seems much more interesting. This could be related to the fact that I have dark brown eggs though - white eggs probably show a lot more all around.

Lockdown is on wednesday - I wish it would get here already.

Hey don't give up! She has to eat and drink to live, yanno? Did she get back on the nest afterwards? it's normal for her to take breaks of 10-20minutes in my experience. Hens don't really have a lockdown, until they feel the eggs moving and chicks squirming underneath them.... that is when you cannot remove them from the nest, at all, lest you lose a finger.

You can put the food and water closer to her (I even put a food dish IN her nest and put lettuce all around her so she could sit & eat) but she will want to get up to poop not on her eggs once per day. That once per day poop is pretty smelly too.

I'd say you are correct. 3 pullets and one roo. Congrats! Thanks for sharing. I love to see the end result, that being your beautiful birds of course. I'm hoping to add a few more BCM hens to my flock. I just can't keep enough eggs to supply those wanting to buy them plus not having anything left for my breakfast. I've resorted to buying store bought eggs because I'm selling every egg they lay. I guess in a way it's a good problem. Hey it pays for my feed.

Happy to share! I have 9 of 17 chooks are roos right now (lol lord help us when they start crowing) all around 2.5 mos old, so I'm working on finding them homes before the dinner plate. The BCMs are going to be egglayers exclusively, not breeders, so the Marans roo is finding another home this week. I found a lady who wants him for her flock of wade jean Marans hens, so he IS going to become a breeder -- but not at my house!

I would absolutely love to be in your position, with a nice flock whose eggs I can sell! Maybe eventually in time... that would be my chicken dream.

The blue laced red Wyandottes are where I have my sights set for learning about breeding.
Hilarious that you have to buy storebought eggs now, that must mean business is booming!

Ok, this is only her 2nd time, I thought for sure they had a lockdown, thanks :) She did get back on them, but I'm not sure how long she was off of them. She was sitting next to the waterer drinking, & pecked at the feeder a few times & got back on. I wasn't standing there but a few minutes, so who knows?!
Last time I moved the water next to the nest but she spilled it & luckily it fell just right, missing the eggs. I am about to make some hard boiled eggs again to feed her. She's been hanging her butt off the nest, I think she's pretty smart. I saw a video where someone's broody pooped on the egg as it was zipping. So sad :(
