Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Hey don't give up! She has to eat and drink to live, yanno? Did she get back on the nest afterwards? it's normal for her to take breaks of 10-20minutes in my experience. Hens don't really have a lockdown, until they feel the eggs moving and chicks squirming underneath them.... that is when you cannot remove them from the nest, at all, lest you lose a finger.

You can put the food and water closer to her (I even put a food dish IN her nest and put lettuce all around her so she could sit & eat) but she will want to get up to poop not on her eggs once per day. That once per day poop is pretty smelly too.
omg our broody decided to poop on her eggs but then she hatched three. And yes that poop i so smeelly.

Ok, this is only her 2nd time, I thought for sure they had a lockdown, thanks

She did get back on them, but I'm not sure how long she was off of them. She was sitting next to the waterer drinking, & pecked at the feeder a few times & got back on. I wasn't standing there but a few minutes, so who knows?!
Last time I moved the water next to the nest but she spilled it & luckily it fell just right, missing the eggs. I am about to make some hard boiled eggs again to feed her. She's been hanging her butt off the nest, I think she's pretty smart. I saw a video where someone's broody pooped on the egg as it was zipping. So sad

Nah it's ok, in fact I have just started a practice where I take the lid off my incubator for 10ish minutes per day to simulate a hen getting off the nest! It lets the eggs cool down a little bit, no harm done. The reason I started this practice is to see if I have chicks hatch on day 21 instead of day 20, like I have been. I was thinking that by letting them cool, they would take a little bit longer to "cook." Ha.

We humans with our perfect incubators keeping the temperature sooo perfect isn't really what happens in nature.

That IS smart if she's hanging her butt off the nest, good for her! she knows what she's doing, let mama do her thang

Well, I caught my broody off her nest getting some food & water. This is day 19 what the heck?! She's suppose to be on lockdown. :-/

Looks like I may have to order a few chicks

mine get of some...I just let them do what they do! I'm sure your fine

I am officially in lock down I have to work till 10p tonight and when I left a couple of eggs were rocking :) glad I am working the next 3 days 2p to 10p or I know for sure I'd be clued to the uncubator watching like a hawk my dog has upgraded this morning from looking at incubator to looking and whining she knows some things going on but can't figure it out

I'm not the one that found the puppy. A friend did. I just happen to have a can of puppy milk left over from taking care of baby squirrels. So I brought him over to take care of him for the night. I was thinking about keeping him but I have a dog, a parrot, 64 chickens and Max. Max is a tad jealous. My dog is really old. But the dog is sooooo sweet. I love him. Someone already asked my friend for him and is driving 3 hours to pick him up. I am trying to be an adult and do the responsible thing. I don't have time for a puppy. My entire day today has been about the puppy. Not by choice. I have some many thing I should have done that are now put off until tomorrow. I have to replace a circuit breaker and fix another busted pipe but first I have to find it. But if it doesn't work out with the lady coming to get him...

Meyer hatchery and Ideal poultry are selling now.

I guess I'm just strange. I had my eggs in an egg carton but I didn't like it. I want to touch every egg.

You're not strange at all...a lot of folks have tried it. I tried hatching them in the carton. I couldn't believe how many chicks pipped, right onto the carton. They couldn't zip because the carton was in the way. I had to assist quite a few. My personal experience. :/
