Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Day 7 here and I candled for the first time with my new Brinsea Ovascope. It sure works well compared to my led flashlight I tried candling with last hatch. I could see so much detail in the eggs and they are blue colored Americauna eggs which i have heard are difficult to candle. 8 out of 10 eggs show veins inside so i was so excited to see that! 1 might be a clear because it only has a yolk looking part on the bottom of the egg. Then one huge egg looks like it could be a double yolker. Has anyone seen that when candling? Sorry I can't take a picture of this one to show you. Can a 2 yolk egg be incubated? It looks like both sides of the egg had a growing mass in its own yolk. What do you think?

Good job..to the both of you.  Glad things worked out.

Thanks! I always learn something new with every hatch. I am having the best hatch of shipped eggs this go-'round. 11 incubated, 3 we're clear at day 6, and all 8 that went into lockdown are hatching. 7 have hatched and one pipped at the start of day 21. Woohoo! :) I'll post pics when they are out of the bator.

My temperature was at 97 98 for about 10 days tomorrow is lockdown. What should I expect.
The same thing I am dealing with...Today is hatch day...or was supposed to be, I candled a few tonight and maybe one or two of the sixteen is getting close (within a few days) the others have a bit to go, still a lot of clear at the pointy end of the shell, I will never allow my temp to run that low again, these are the German New Hampshires  and chances are I have lost every one of them, the two that look to be closest to hatching are a couple of my barnyard mixes I threw in..

That happened to me once, and I did lose a few but I still got a decent hatch (well, less than 50% tho). They started pipping on day 21 and hatched through day 24 or 25. The later hatchlings were definitely weaker and a little underdeveloped, but they turned out ok. I did have one case of splayed legs too. That time I learned that you can't trust the temperature setting on the Brinsea Advance incubators. I am now using one or more other thermometers to calibrate the temp on the incubator each time I incubate. Digital thermometers tend to be off by a degree or two. I'm using analog now, and I'm getting a much better hatch rate.

Also, my one egg that had clear fluid on the pointy end of the shell? It hatched earlier than the rest, but I had to help it out. It took too long and got stuck to the shell. I think also partly due to the egg-white or something like it. I ended up helping it out of the shell after at least 14 or 15 hours, but it was covered in egg white that had dried hard and all it's feathers were stuck to its body. I gently washed it in warm (not hot) water at the sink with a cotton ball, dried it with a towel, and put it back in the incubator. If you do this, take care not to get any water on the nostrils or it will drown.

I'm trying to be patient and optimistic... I just hate to have come this far and realize to late I had screwed up....

I had a chick with my last hatch that got stuck, it decided to hatch during a time when several were or had hatched and the humidity was really high, After I helped it out we noticed it wasn't drying, and just laying around, took it out and cleaned it with a very soft toothbrush and warm water, put it back in to dry and it was fine..... It was the runt but I was so glad because she turned out to be a girl !!!

Don't lose hope yet! Give it a few days. I'll send some good hatching vibes out your way :) good luck!!

Outstanding. Congrats!

2 boxes of eggs should finally be at the post office tomorrow morning. One box is already there but the roads were too icey until it was too late. I have been thinking warm thoughts for them. I even bought a turner for them.

Setting some Lf Cochin eggs tonight..set my bantam cochin eggs last night. I am expecting my NN's and Silkie eggs soon..hopefully tomorrow, together, so I can set them together.
Wow, I am going to have all of my hens and new layers by mid spring. :) I have all of the others sold that I am not keeping in my last few hatches. Keeping a couple of BO's and Rhodebars, and, one of the EE's. :)
