Well I was excited about lockdown but then my Barnyard mixes weren't moving the last time I candled them I will post some day 18 candeling pics see what everyone thinks, I asked opinions on whether to lay them down for hatch of put in the cardboard cartons there are no detached air cells but unless I missed it I didn't get any response. so I left them in cartons I knew the rhodebars should stay in cartons they wer shipped an the two that look viable have saddle air sacks. for a brooder I am going to just use a large cardboard box (I have an unlimited supply of 18" by 48" by 18" deep boxes?going to put shavings in the bottom of the box. I have a very powerful shop light on a tripod stand that puts out a lot of heat I am going to use I believe it will be safer then a hanging heat lamp so it is not that I am nervous about that just feel like If I set it all up I will not have any live hatches.
I leave my upright. It bothers me when the chicks start knocking and rolling the other unhatched ones around. I have had better hatch rate with upright.
What day are you on? During lockdown, if there is condensation on the windows, it's too high. So I try to keep my level right below that.
if your locking down keep a couple of blobs of wet paper towel in the bater

breathe! it's going to be okay
so you have zero pips yet? I would open it up and candle them, that's just me.
You can leave them in the incubator and move them as little as possible, candle inside the incubator.
I enforce lockdown (no opening) once I have confirmed that there is an internal pip
edit: listen to heidisgran!
listen....your getting a lot of info from people that do things different than what is suggested...they may have some experience and do things according to their personal experience but in general...
at lock down raise the humidity and lock down the incubator ( don't open it) until after they hatch...if you think your going to need to add water try to place a piece of sponge beneath a vent hole and use a straw to wet the sponge through the vent...
if your new to hatching and don't know from your own experience what to expect just follow the guidelines very closely
it is nerve racking....just try to breath and let the little chick do what it needs to do![]()
i'm terrible at candling eggs. I think the flashlight that I'm using is not strong enough. The eggs are not clear I'll tell you that much but I don't know if they have that red ring of death thing that I keep reading about. All I can see is a dark mass and red veins everywhere. And I am at day 14.No. I monitor development & lockdown when I see internal pips or hear peeping. The ones that I have left in lockdown way before they were ready tend to end up too fat or stuck to the shell & can't turn to pip & zip properly.

Why do some of my eggs have these speckles??
uh oh.. I put my eggs on lock down last night (day 20) some looked ready but no internal pip. some didn't look quite ready. I was freaking out cuz I forgot to put on lockdown on the 19th day. What do I do now? Day 21 and I got nothing. I haven't lifted the lid at all today. Ya'll got me SCARED that I messed up. Even the ones that looked ready haven't done the external pip.
WHAT DO I DO? just leave them alone? take the water out? Yikes, I'm freaking out a little right now.![]()
when they pip the wrong end they are still a couple of days from hatching- think of it this way- normally when they pip the correct end, they take a day in the air cell to breathe before piping an outer hole- the may take another day with just an outer pip, when they pip the lower end they don't get a day in the inner airsack so if you try and help them they will be bloody, and not yolk absorbed yet- the probably will need help but not right away- when the pip the wrong end I make sure the beak can breathe but try'n leave it for a bit.
