Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

I picked up my eggs at the post office. I suspect some may have been frozen.

I will try to hatch all that aren't broken. Bresse, Basque, Barnevelder, SUlmtaler, Red Dorkings, Araucana and a few of my own EEs and Marans.

I also picked up my new chickens. New to me but 4 months old. I got different hens than I was expecting. 3 pullets- a Cream Legbar X Dominique, a Red Orpington and a Gold Laced Orpington and the 2 roosters I was expecting- a Chocolate Orpington and a Jubilee Orpington. They are all so pretty. I am going to have rainbow Orpington chicks in a few months. I am so excited to see how many crazy colors I can get. Pictures tomorrow.

While I was gone the power went out and burned out the brooder bulbs when it came back on. I lost another Bielfelder. They seem to be so much more sensitive than all of my other breeds.

Wooohooo!!! Got a more powerful light to candle with and boy what a difference!!!! Got a bunch of movement going on in most eggs. Some are coming along faster than others. Have a couple that never developed and maybe two or three quitters. So out of sixteen, hopefully I'll get 8 or so to hatch. Fingers crossed......3 days from lockdown!!!!

here's what to look for- day 1 and day 3

day 4

day 5 and 6

day 8
I still saw eye- but he moved when I took pic.

Great photos..don't you love that you can get an idea of how fertile the egg is at day 1? Then nothing on the second day, but usually by day 3 or 4 you can see the veining. Pretty fun.

Hey there, I set 44 eggs on Jan 12th, four are Ameracauna and the other forty are Ameracauna crossed with Golden/Red Sex Links. This is my first hatch and as of today it looks like we have 33 that are still going strong. They are due on Sunday and I'm having a hard time staying away from the incubator!

I have a couple questions...

I've seen movement in a couple of the eggs when candling but the majority of them just look full/dark, is this normal at this stage?

One of the eggs does not have a clear line where the air sac is, I can see the air sac but the line is mottled, none of the other eggs are like this so it concerns me.

I'd appreciate any advice/reassurance you can offer, thanks!

It can be pretty tough to see into those darker eggs. I also have some EE and Olive eggs in right now. Pretty dark in there. Trying to go by the air sacs too. I have a couple that are questionable, but I am not going to worry about it..just put them into lock down anyway being this close..they go into lock down on Tues. The air sacs were all much more clear in the beginning. It's just so hard to decide when you are this close to hatching. Good luck!

Full and dark is normal, those should be hatching out soon!

What does the mottled line look like? Does the line look like it has a "shadow" behind it? it could be the chick moving around in the air cell, against the membrane on the inside. This is usually seen right before hatch or right before internal pip, as the chick is getting into position!

Here is some more detailed information about this stage of incubation:

The line is spotty looking, not a perfectly defined edge like I've seen in the other eggs. Just off center on the wide end of the egg is a darker spot (shadow?) but I can't tell if it's moving, the eggs are hard to see through. I thought I may have heard a faint tap when I listened but I couldn't be certain. I tried to get a picture of the air sac but my phone is horrible for dark pictures so they all turned out blurry.

I'm just going to leave it be and see what happens, it's one of the eggs I've been most excited to see hatch.

One more question...

I'm using a LG incubator and am having a hard time getting the humidity up past 60%. We're mid way through day 19 and I have all reservoirs filled, a wet washcloth, and a dish filled with water and papertowels in there, is 60% okay? I have both vents closed because the humidity drops to 50% or lower when I open them, at what point is it necessary to open them during hatching?

If your bator doesn't have a fan you should be fine as low as 40%.
