Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Thank you. I'm a terrible mother hen hovering now! My temps have been constant at 100-102 (in  a still air) and humidity was at 30 until day 18 AM, then at 40-50 and has been at 57-63 constant since day 18 PM.  I'm a little terrified that my humidity is high - When should I candle them to see how they are or if I did drown them or do something else wrong?

Crossing all of my fingers and toes that someone pips tonight.
I've come to the conclusion that we can't have total control. You just have to hope that you've done your best to give those eggs a chance to hatch. Then you just let everything go and let nature take over.

The first 6 were wreaking havoc in the incubator so we moved them to the mini brooder for tonight. Chickie on the left looks comfy, doesn't he/she?

How and when do I sex the babies?

heart attack sleep position how cute. its not scientific but roo's usually feather just a bit slower the pullets but i've had a pullet feather slow once so thats not a for sure method...other wise you'll just have to wait till the grow up and get big red combs and wattles and start crowing

Sometimes it is hard to read this website. There is a dark figure that moves across the screen. Does anyone else have this problem? This is what it looks like on my screen.

Oooh! Do you sell your wheaten ameraucana eggs per chance? I was dissatisfied how mine came to me... Packaged on their sides, they could shift around and no do not x ray on them. :( I have some significant saddle cells on a couple and one had a shell that looked like it had oil spots and discoloring all over it and I just got rid of that one before even setting (had one too many anyhow). Not sure what will/won't hatch and I may wanna get some more! (After my maran eggs of course!)

I'm open to selling eggs. I'm sure I can do a great job on packaging (kind of OCD about that). I first should ask where are you located? Do you want to see my hatch first? I'm getting worried...REALLY worried about this after seeing all the problems that can happen. No wonder they say, "don't count your chickens before they hatch"!

Some breeds you can check there wing feathers. 2 different lengths- female, all of the same length- male. I find it works best at about a day and a half. JUst after they start growing in.
There is vent sexing but I don't know much about it. You can google it. I think it is also done in the first day or 2.

Putting chicks on newspaper increases the odds of them getting splay leg or leg injury. It is slick. Paper towels work well.

Thank you for the sexing info! The chicks are happily sleeping on a flannel baby blanket now too.
