Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

I am on days 7. 1 of 2 Sulmtalers (free gift with purchase), 2 of 5 Barnevelders, 5 of 5 Bresse, 5 of 5 Legbars, 6 of 6 Basque, 4 of 9 Araucanas, 11 out of 15 Red Dorkings are developing. Still left the others in just in case. Of course the ones I really wanted were the Sulmtalers and Barnevelders.

But yeah for the others

, considering the weather while they were traveling, it's not to bad. But I am not counting my chicks yet only the eggs.

Has anyone had Basque? I know nothing about them. I ordered the eggs for the Barnevelders. The Basque came with them. I have read a bit. Very pretty.

When do I increase the humidity for chicken eggs?

Personally I wait until I see an internal pip before I create lockdown. The internal pip should happen on day 19 if conditions are right, sometimes day 20. I will increase humidity on day 20 even if I dont see an internal pip. The idea is that they are still evaporating right up until the internal pip happens. so by keeping the humidity low(er), you are helping them finish up the last stages before i.pip, then the humidity is raised to 55-65%. it is up to you, you can do it by pip or by day

I am only on day 3 so it was only for a short time (it was after I added the eggs and left them to come up to temp..) I have been able to maintain a pretty constant temp since that spike and then the drop when I adjusted (that was all in the first day) Good to know I wasn't potentially drowning them before they are even started lol I think I will keep that air vent open now
I agree that the troughs make it very hard to remove water (I have a turner in there as well). I hardly added any water to it at all and the humidity ended up going up to 49% so I opened the vent hole and it came down to 44*..maybe I should just sop up the water out of it totally

@Farmer Viola I did read up on the dry hatch method and it sounds good (I wish I'd have known about that before I added water to mine..hindsight lol)

it's okay! I actually did the exact same thing on my first hatch.. I followed the incubator instructions for 2 days then came here and was set straight I couldn't get my humidity down at the time, even after removing all the water. I used a bowl of rice in the incubator to absorb some moisture, worked like a charm! BTW, that hatch had a 80% hatch rate so all is DEFINITELY not lost!

I've got 12 out this morning. Lots of pips still going on. Last night marked day 21 for me so up until tonight no one is late. I've noticed though my temps have dropped a little in my incubator. I raised it by .2 degrees. Now to get the brooder heated and ready. Oh I've also got a black copper Marans trying to be broody. I want her to lay not set on eggs. I've been kicking her off the nest but every time I go back she back on it. Silly hen doesn't know it's 20 degrees with snow on the ground!

Hooray! I don't know how you have the willpower to own a windowless incubator, all I do is stare into mine! hmm maybe you are on to something...

"Pepper" has a chick this morning...it's most likely the one from the incubator that I gave her the other day because they always seem to hatch a little early....tomorrow is due day for her other egg. looks like the first chick is a silkie

Really good to know! I know with my first hatch I may not have a very high hatch rate but I am trying to document everything so I can figure out what I could improve upon..learning how this bator responds will help me next hatch also.
Another question...this one regarding when you stop turning do you take the turner out and lay the eggs on their side or just leave them upright in the turner and turning it off? I have seen that some people say to leave them in the upright position, but others take them out and leave them on their side..seems like I wouldn't want that bulky turner in there, but I can understand about leaving them in the same position

Up this am and still nothing! - I guess we are still on Day 21 until tonight as I set in the evening. I am pretty sure one of the eggs deffinately has "something " in it.
Though I remember last year when we eggtopsied the first batch I got slow scrambled egg instead of the little chicks I was convinced were growing when I candled! lol

I am still of course hopeful. - It is early days and I do think the temp was a bit on the low side so thinking a later hatch maybe tomorrow or Monday morning?
