Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Quote:

I have a little girl that hatched with her back toes up under her foot...and due to walking funny (even though we tried booting her) she now has a splayed leg...she's eating and drinking...gets herself around so we just call her our special needs baby...she'll figure it all out. she's about 3 weeks old now

my little special needs girl is really withering this morning....so sad she fought so hard but her neck bone is really deformed too...I'll just keep her with me today so she feels safe...

I went out and found my little 6 week old frizzle dead...that breaks my heart DANG!!

I just had to euthanize a chick I hatched a couple of days ago that couldn't stand.

Legs wouldn't bear any weight and one was way out to the side. I took her/him to the vet this morning because I've never had to cull before.. And he confirmed that it couldn't be fixed. I'm sad, but the quality of life of the chick couldn't be good even if I kept it as a pet. I'm sorry for all our recent losses on this thread... *hugs*

it's tough....the rewards out weigh though...your a good chick mama

Thanks

my special needs girl passed...I actually feel like it was a blessing...she was very crippled...I snuggled her a lot yesterday so she'd feel loved...she will be missed

Hi everybody,

Hope it's ok to post in here. I'm a first time hatcher in the uk and have a couple of questions.

We are using the brinsea octagon 20 incubator and have 12 normal eggs and 6 rare breed (not sure of the breed), we are on day 18. If the eggs went into the incubator at 7pm on a thurs, will that make day 21 7pm this thurs until 7pm Friday?

I'm asking as I'm not 100% sure at what point I need to lockdown! Do I increase humidity and stop the cradle rocking tonight or tomorrow night?

Also do I need to remove the eggs that are not showing development?

Thank you! Hope someone can help,

Ellie x

Hi Ellie, there is a March hatch a long...in case you want to move over with us to that thread
they aren't that finicky if you put them in their hatching position and raise the humidity a few hrs earlier or later you'll be fine....I would candle the eggs, most likely they're mostly dark and full of chick and the air cell is tipping down 1 side...if you candle from the pointy end you'll notice a yellowish clear looking area, that is unabsorbed yolk that the little chick will be absorbing before it hatches...
the ones that are clear through or not developed as fully are probably quitters...if your not sure leave them in...if your certain dispose of them....in a few days the chick will pip it's inner air and breath as it begins to run out of air it will pip the outer shell....after that outer pip it could be any time or up to 36 hrs later that it hatches, if it goes over 36 hrs then you may need to intervene, if you believe in that, some think it's unnatural but I believe we are unnaturally incubating so why not...
I'll get you the thread to the March hatch a long...hope to see you there with chicky pictures
