Question, are you going to lock down the turkey eggs separate from the chick eggs?  They need a much higher humidity..usually, unless you have found out different in hatching them together before.  I am always interested in the way folks are hatching, because not everyone does it the same way.   I hope you get some Orpingtons!  The reds are pretty.  :)

I got the turkey eggs first, then a week later the chicken eggs arrived. It is just by coincidence that their lockdown date fell on the same day! :D

I hatch mine together, but my bators are all still air. I usually hatch chicks at 45-55% & bump to 60-70% when I have turkeys or ducks hatching with them. That's still low enough for chicks.
Not sure how well they work together in forced air since it's the fans blowing on the eggs that dry the membranes so quickly for slow hatchers like turkeys & ducks.

she never laid an egg.

mine was 6 months before she started laying....but

Hi everybody,

Hope it's ok to post in here. I'm a first time hatcher in the uk and have a couple of questions.

We are using the brinsea octagon 20 incubator and have 12 normal eggs and 6 rare breed (not sure of the breed), we are on day 18. If the eggs went into the incubator at 7pm on a thurs, will that make day 21 7pm this thurs until 7pm Friday?

I'm asking as I'm not 100% sure at what point I need to lockdown! Do I increase humidity and stop the cradle rocking tonight or tomorrow night?

Also do I need to remove the eggs that are not showing development?

Thank you! Hope someone can help,

Ellie x

I just put some into lock down today. But, I had everything ready last night, even got the humidity up a bit more than usual...then today..day 18, I got the humidity up to 62. If you don't see movement when putting them into lock down, and really don't see any thing but clear, toss them. But, if they are dark eggs, it's hard to tell at times. Just put them in if you are questioning. I have some Olive Eggs and a Marans egg that will go into lock down soon, it's getting real dark in those eggs. Good luck..don't open the bator once you are in lock down. :D

mine go into lock down on Sunday. Candled a few last night and enjoyed seeing em moving around in there. This will be my very first chicken eggs to hatch out. So excited and can't wait to watch em hatch. Gotta get all my waterers and feeders cleaned and the brooder etc. So I can be ready for em.

I was surprised today with two little fuzzy butts in the bator. They are do to hatch Wednesday. So I transferred the rest to the hatching incubator and raised humidity. Lol

aweeee so sweet! I sure hope all goes well for you since they're hatching out earlier. My humidity was 85 yesterday when I added the water to it but it's dropped today to 75 so that's good. I bet mine will start hatching tomorrow evening or tomorrow night. My nephew I borrowed the bator from said his starts hatching out on day 20 and I'm following his directions on how he did. I dry incubated these and added water yesterday. He said he got better hatches in this bator by doing that. Most all day Sat. I was getting things cleaned up and ready for them. Got the fermented food started like on Friday so it would be going well and washed the little brooder box and the feeders and waterers. Got the lights out to keep them warm etc.
Good luck on the rest of your hatch.

I have 4 pipping and I can hear one of them chirping. lol Noticed one pipping this morning at like 7:45 and then found 2 more and then just went back and noticed yet another one. One of them is really working at getting outta that shell.
