JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

our first eggs hatched last night!

we've had chicks before, but this was our first broody hen and home-grown eggs ever. it's been so exciting! our polish was sitting on somebody else's eggs... we candled all 3 of them at day 10 and only one wasnt growing.

the first pip was yesterday morning and they hatched sometime after 10pm and before 6am. I was worried about all kinds of things like their guts falling out their butts, and heat or light etc. etc.but they both came out perfectly health with no problems. we got medicated chic starter and water and chick grit all set up. now we are just going to let nature and mamma hen do the rest

now we are certain that the chicks came from our barred rocks, and the rooster is a polish

Seriously, I scratch my head on every hatch!  Sorry things were rough for yours.  I spent an hour on a chick that pipped last night and zipped 3/4 and stopped.  That lil thing was stuck in it's shell like I have NEVER experienced before...I used so much antibiotic ointment on it.....I think most of a tube...going over top and under the gunk with q tips...holy cow...what a mess and it must have happened because the humidity was at 70% at 3 am and about the same at 4 am...when i got up at 640 it was at 45%...ugghhh.  The little guy is in the brinsea drying off now.
Hi my total of chicks hatched was 4. I did eggtopsies on the remains 8. The 3 that had pipped in the side of the eggs were turn sideways in the egg, 2 had absorbed all of the yolk, 1 hadnt. Of the other 5, all chicks were full grown, 1 had a small amount of yolk to absorb. You could not see any of the heads. They were all completely bowed in the middle with their feet and head being at the pointy end of the egg. I did a lot of reading about silkies last night here & other sites and a few people talked of stopping the turner on day 16 instead of day 18 because many times silkies hatch on day 19. When I try to hatch them again I'm going to try that. It's sad only 2 out of 12 eggs pipped in the air cell. The rest were all malpositioned. There are so many factors that go into hatching and it just wasn't meant to be this time.

I had a rough time at the silkies too. I started with 48 silkie eggs, 26 were blanks. 22 to lockdown and 15 hatched. I am happy as heck!

I opened up mine too. They were all fully formed with the yolk absorbed in all but one.

Frustrating, but very happy for you that you ended up with 15. These were my brother-in-laws eggs, was really hoping to get a good hatch for him :(

Mine were Porto (Indigoegg.us) Probably all the potholes i hit driving through PA did most of them in!

Well, at least you have an egg supplier...tell him it's time for another round! I wish things had come out better for you. I was crossing my fingers!

Congrats to the healthy hatches, my total for January was 35/36 chicks (Last night we lost an upside downwrong end pipper that ended up hatching but didnt survive the night) I was sad but I did all I could and I am glad it at least wasnt traumatic or that I had to make the decision some of you had to. Headed over to the February thread to keep up with my last 2 batches in this adventure!

Congrats on your very successful hatch. I'm headed to Feb. Hatch as well. Technically my one chick that was from my Jan hatch waited to come today, so I'm straddling hatches lol.

I put an ear of corn into the brooder with the 26 TJ chicks. At first they all ran to the other side of the brooder in terror. I came back 5 minutes later and -- OMG!! -- they were like little piranha. The thing was stripped clean in no time flat. Guess they figured that one out....
