January 2016 Hatch-Come Join Me

I have a run set up as a brooder room. In the shelter part it is mostly closed off and I have an old comforter up up to shield from the wind. Part of it is partionioned off and I put a couple of heat lamps for the chickens. They go out 2 days after hatching. I've had the best luck with them that way and lose less that way.

Where do you find 100 watt light bulbs? I've looked everywhere and can only find 72 watt.
Sorry you lost all the New Years hatch eggs. But so glad to have you joining us for the January hatch.

I can still find 75 and 100w incandescent bulbs at smaller hardwarestores...ACE, DIY, and mom and pop stores.

Mine uses 60w candelabra base bulbs.

Thanks, I'll have to see if I can some of them type stores around here.

Big franchise store seem to have taken everything over.

Sorry for your loss. I just use regular light bulb. My box is 2in thick insulated panels so they heat up the box very nicely.

Congratulations! I see you had a good Christmas. Well a guy just came through with 2 dozen eggs. Only problem was there were 11 of them that were for sure Banty eggs. I don't hatch bantams anymore. They're just too small for me to mess with. So I've wound up setting a total of 46 eggs. 16 were from my hens, all chicks should hatch out Naked Necked. We'll see. I got 17 eggs from my dad his eggs were all from Leghorn or Leghorn cross hens under a Welsummer rooster. Should be descent layers. Then from the guy this morning I set an additional 13. 5 were from Leghorn hens and 1 was a cream colored egg ( possibly an oversized bantam, egg was larger than a Banty egg but a little smaller than a large fowl egg). Then the other 7 were brown eggs from most likely Red Sexlinked hens. He said there was a slight chance a few could be NN, because there were NN roosters running with the mixed group. I'm just not going to hope to much for any though.

Have collected 13 eggs yesterday and today. I'd like 18-24 to set.

Right now their in their carton, large end up, in a bag, tilted the opposite direction every 8 hours, in the coldest room in the house. Best I can do.

I was hoping for about 36 a good size hatch, but I've never gotten a hundred percent hatch so since I had the eggs I went ahead and set them. Hoping for at least 25/30 to hatch
