January 2016 Hatch-Come Join Me

I have a sinking feeling I won't be getting any more chicks. I don't see any movement and my chicks are almost dry. I know it is only Day 21 but I have a gut feeling. 7 eggs are still left, most of them were moving last night. I was really surprised this morning this one egg hasn't pipped yet, it was really rocking, could have sworn it was going to be the next one. Oh well, still a waiting game.

Please, be happier...as I said before, my hatches are always planned to be 23 days long. 21 is just the average. Incubating is nearly as difficult as giving birth to a human, so I am told (I can't give birth, and never have..so what do I know). 21 has become a magical number with eggs, as has 19...so many people expect hatches on day 19, but that's like hoping for a premature baby.

Have you done any research on eggtopsies? As in, cracking the eggs after day 23 to see what stage they were at when they failed? There is a lot to be learned from that research, and in there you may well find lots of reasons to believe your hatch isn't finished after day 21.

Remember, there is a ridiculous amount of effort required just to make the first pip, and an even greater effort to zip. That two did it on day 20 tells me your hatch is on time. You said earlier that day 21 doesn't finish until some time tomorrow, so de-stress a little.

And remember, you didn't do anything bad, you gave them all as good a chance as nature does. Not all eggs hatch.

You are definitely right. This one is still a success for sure (especially compared to the last one, at least I got some chicks this time). It is all a learning experience. I have done 1 eggtopsy before, and the last time my humidity was too high prior to lockdown, so this time I kept it lower and was more successful. I will probably do an eggtopsy again this time due to the fact that I did have two chicks hatch and I would definitely like to know why the others haven't (especially when they were wiggling so much), but yes I will wait till after day 23. I will start with the tap and candle, and from there I will do the float test, and then leave them be again (those that pass) and then do it all again on day 25, from there I have a decision to make, so I won't worry until that time comes.

Fingers crossed and hoping something will happen for you.

16 in my brooder, 3 more still in the incubator that have hatched, others that have pipped, some have stopped moving.
Waiting on the others til tomorrow evening I guess.

Have one with curled toes, and one that is definitely not right. But colors are beautiful. Yellow, red, yellow with black stripes, and one black.
Going to try to put a splint on the curled toes, but now the hard part.
I'm supposed to sell this batch to put money towards a second incubator.
But they are my first hatch outs!

I have silkie eggs coming Saturday, so need to get this one ready to go again on Sunday.
A friend has been collecting all week for me, so timeline is kind of set in stone.
