January 2016 Hatch-Come Join Me

I
I do lock down on day 18 and at the same time roughly that they originally went in on day 1 up the humidity and force myself to leave it alone and some will hatch one day 19

Yes lockdown on day 18. You may get a few early hatchers bit don't anticipate any until day 21 that way you won't be disappointed.

My eggs are wiggling!!! I am having last minute lockdown panic. The air cells look great in some of the eggs but not all of them. The rest is so dark I can't see anything. It's definitely time soon, those eggs are full. So I'm leary of upping the humidity too soon for the ones whose air cells don't look so good but on the other hand there's wiggling, stuff is going to happen soon or am I just jumping the gun. Add water am of day 18 as planned? Late day 18? Day 19? What about rolling (manually), stop now like skip tonight? Or again tonight, tmrw, noon then done? Overthinking??? Here's the good cells. The small look like no change from day 14 to 17. The lines are day 7,14 and 17 (pm)

Yes, you're overthinking...;-]

Your hatch is going to hatch what its going to hatch. Nature dictates that the strong survive and the weak do not, and eggs are not all equal...which is why, for example, I always consider a hatch to take 23 days. Some come early, some late, and so I don't give up until day 23. I lockdown after 18 full days, regardless of air sacs. After that, I only open the bator once a day to remove dry chicks to the brooder...and typically not before day 20 has finished. Remember, they'll be just fine in the bator for at least 2 whole days, they have their yolks to sustain them.

Resist the urge to assist.

Hi. I started 30 eggs 8 days ago. 20 of them are growing. 10 still just look like yolks but i'm gonna wait until i candle again on day 14 to give them a bit longer and see. I can't wait until lock down time. This is my first time incubating. My last chicks were from my broody hen.

Welcome.

You just barely got them in for a Jamuary hatch, but that doesn't really matter.

Mine are on day 20 today.

Lockdown is always exciting isn't it?

Wow! It's hard getting $15.00 a hen around here. That's what I've been selling mine for. People always trying to talk you down.

I once offered some for $10.00 to a friend and they turned it down thinking it was too high. That was alright with me because I really didn't want to sell them at the time anyway.

I think I will probably be going up on mine anyway that I sell locally. Auctions are a little different, mostly I sell culled ( don't lay very well and old spent or neatly spent hens) I usually fetch around 10 to 12 dollars each for those.

Yes increase your price. It used to be $20 to $30 here for laying hens, now since the egg price went up so much people will pay more because they'll get it back in eggs. I also got many emails trying to haggle me. I didn't even respond. I saw another ad asking $40 for RIRs and went with it.

ty. yes it is we all take turns watching so we hopefully don't miss a pip. We missed one hatch last time but caught the rest.

My broody is up to day 14, so a week to go. What do I need to order for the chicks? I'm hoping to keep them with the mum. The little 1ltr waterer that she's got at the moment called itself a chick waterer, but I see other people with much smaller ones so I don't know if it's good enough. Chick starter- what to put that in?. What to put on the floor in her area - it's a concrete floor? She's got 10 eggs. 1 i think is no good but I'm not very good at candling. If it's still not looking like it's done anything in a couple of days should I remove it or just leave it?

I use start/grow crumble for the chicks. You could use flock raiser I think also. I put rocks/marbles in the waterer for a few days so they do not drown. I just sprinkle the feed on the ground the first week or so. I add a little feeder with the round holes after a few days but they do not use it much. I wet some of the feed after a few days and they go for it. I would leave the egg in if it is not leaking unless I am sure it is no good. I do not like the concrete as I feel that it draws a lot of heat out of them.

My broody has done just fine watching her two babies. They have a standard chick waterer and haven't had a problem. Use small pebbles or marbles if you are concerned.

I'd put some pine shavings down for them-it'll help the floor to be warmer.
