January 2023 Hatch-a-long

I am hoping to have some fertile eggs this year. Only got one chick to hatch last year and one so far this year. I know my roo was doing his thing but not sure if it was all the fluffy butts preventing it or what. I have 2 roos this year and 19 girls so hopefully one of them can get the job done.

I tried that too. The assistant was a little too aggressive and had to go.

I have 3, 13-week-old candidates at the moment and will see who shapes up the best.

I also have a broomstick and know how to use it.

They are doing great. Eating up a storm. Lol. They will head to their home tomorrow I think. I will miss them.

I know, it’s hard to see them go. They all have such distinct personalities

I put 16 mixed bantam silkie eggs in on the 5th, honestly not to sure how long they'll take to hatch but I'll likely do lockdown on the 18th day.

I just stuffed 28 eggs into my Nurture Right 360 -- because I'm expecting some clears due to having only 1 rooster over ~21 hens and because I've only been getting about 60-70% hatches.

Having done this, I'll probably have more chicks than I expected, but I'll manage.

Good to know I'm not the only one over-stuffing my Nurture Right 360! I finally figured out which eggs my favorite blue egger hen was laying, and couldn't resist adding a few more. Don't know what I'm going to do come hatch time though - all 24 are developing! No clears. Speckle's been doing his job.

You just open it a few times a day and rotate the extra eggs and any that are prevented from turning by hand, right?

Not to be a “Debbie Downer” but I’ve had plenty of fully developed chicks die in the shell. There will be casualties along the way.
