January 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
Candled yesterday (Day 13 for most of the eggs) and for some eggs I am seeing body parts, like legs and beaks, and they squirm a bit when I stick them over the candler. I know human babies don't like light. I suspect the bright light from the candler is bothering the chicks, so they squirm.

Most of the eggs are filled with darkness, I can see some defined veins, like maybe a 1/4" ring of veins around where the air sac is, and the protruding body parts that wiggle. There seems to be a small clear space usually around the air sack, where the body parts protrude, and it's cool to see them wiggle.

For one egg, only half of it is dark, and the darkness seems to flow a bit. I don't see any body parts, but it doesn't smell. I do still see veins attached to the edge of the shell around the clear parts of the egg. Do you think this egg is dead? It looks like it has developed half as much as the others in the same time period. I'll try and snap a picture later today.

I’ve set my turkey and duck eggs on lockdown. A total of 8 turkey(100%) and 6 duck eggs(42%) made it to lockdown. 3 days till hatch, unless they hatch early.
I will candle my Red BC eggs later today, they’re 5 days into incubation. Candled one out of curiosity earlier and it had a visible embryo. Have 13 of those set on the incubator, already collecting more for hatching.

I keep forgetting to take egg photos. But I've shuffled the eggs around so that the ones that were sitting on top are now in the actively turning area. I'm trying to keep things as even as possible.

It sounds likely to be a quitter.

I'm not confident in my candling ability, so when I candle and see a potential quitter that doesn't stink or is otherwise obviously bad, I make a note and then candle a couple days later. I only discard them if they fail two successive candlings -- and I have hatched a chick that failed it's 14-day candling but was seen moving at the pre-lockdown candling.

Thanks for your advice! I can do that. I made a note of it and put it back in the incubator.

I figured obvious self-movement inside the egg meant it was alive, but if it doesn't move on its own that I can see, I'm kinda guessing based on photos folks have posted. Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

Of my own hens my new rooster is now not afraid of hens, but i have only cracked one egg that was fertile, but my avatar- "Fancy nancy" had a dirty back, she is normally clean, (we have some mud going on.) She also acted "squatt-y" I hope that means something.

I err on the cautious side and wait. Especially if I see veins. I have had some that I saw veins but couldn't see a baby or movement or whatever and when I check again it is there. If I am not 100% sure it is a quitter I just wait.

Wow so all of yours are still going? Bet you can't wait for lockdown when you can remove the turner and spread them out some. What day are you on again?

I only set them on Sunday. I'll candle them this Sunday.

If they're all good then Rameses has done an amazing job with his large flock of ladies.
