January 2023 Hatch-a-long

I keep forgetting to take egg photos. But I've shuffled the eggs around so that the ones that were sitting on top are now in the actively turning area. I'm trying to keep things as even as possible.

It sounds likely to be a quitter.

I'm not confident in my candling ability, so when I candle and see a potential quitter that doesn't stink or is otherwise obviously bad, I make a note and then candle a couple days later. I only discard them if they fail two successive candlings -- and I have hatched a chick that failed it's 14-day candling but was seen moving at the pre-lockdown candling.
I like this. Interestingly, what I originally thought was a ā€œyolkerā€ was actually a healthy egg! Candled again with the kiddos Thursday night- they loved it! We could see the embryo clearly on #2, with healthy veins that I missed the first time. So make that 11/13 healthy eggs so far.

I haven’t removed the 2 blood rings yet, but I ought to soon- I am checking them daily for smell or any signs of life.

I just saved my first egg to go in the incubator, it will have to wait until I get my shipped eggs. I am just guessing it is fertile. ( because she had a dirty back, it is mud season, and it looked like someone was up there.) I really want a chick from my avatar. I candled, sometimes you can see a dot in the egg from fertile. I didn't see the dot, but I'll take the chance. Large end up.

I placed it in a plastic and then left the bag open

I put it in a cold mud room that will not get frozen or 2 cold. I will tilt also.

Don't check too much.
How much is too much? I’ve candled them twice, and I have the top off the incubator for a minute every day to refill the water cup and check for smells. Figure I’ll candle them on day 14 and day 18, and then lock them down. The blood ring eggs will go at day 14 if they aren’t showing any progress by then.

I dry hatch, but I guess if you are watering every day, opening the incubator would be a good thing to let out all that moisture. Talk to me before you lock down. Say day 16. I will tell you what to look for.

I only use a small shot glass of water in the incubator, which keeps humidity around 45-50%. The water well in the incubator sends humidity up to 65-70%, so I’m keeping it dry until lockdown.
