Good luck on your hatch!

I would add them, just do it fast and have a barrier if you can so the first set doesn't trample the second set.

Happy hatching!

Got home to disaster!

My poor baby all sticky and panting in the corner, Pipper still breathing but looking shrink wrapped. I ran for warm water, ripped the bator top off, grabbed my baby and put her in the brooder after giving her poly-vi-sol fortified water. Wrapped Pipper in a tepid washcloth, gave her a drink after chipping away enough shell to find her beak - what I thought was her beak was a toenail!!

I dribbled warm water outside and inside the membranes and chipped enough shell away to give her a little wiggle room. I think she may also be a black silky. Still no sign of life in the other eggs. If I am blessed enough to have black silkie twins

, I will split Topsy-Turvy's name into topsy and Turvy

Now, I know nothing about silkies, but think they have 5 toes? BUT, I think there is something wrong with Topsy's feet. What do you experts think? Do nothing - watch and wait? Put on "chick sho" like on the splay-leg site? Expect to cull? SO upset

As you can see, even tho' dry she still has icky sticky stuff all over her and isn't fluffy. Try to clean her up? I just don't know what to do

ETA: It's been almost 3 hours and Turvey is still stuck withour progress. What do you think? Go ahead and help some more, understanding the probable consequences, or give her more time? It's been nearly 28 hours since first pip. Temp and humidity seem stable at 100.7 and about 38% [in spite of filled troughs and 2 soaked sponge cloths].

I am so sorry . I am no mater, but I have had the same issue where I helped one out after a really long time and had the feet problems . I think mine ended up not making it. I wish the best of luck

Madcap621: A temp spike, so sorry. Don't worry about you're 1st chick being sticky, no need to wash it cause that will go away; maybe wait until the chick starts to walk or get around to see if the feet pull out of it, then decide if something should be used to straighten the feet. Chickies need a lot of rest, give it some time. As for the 2nd chick, the damp cloth was a good idea. You must do what you think is best. If you decide to chip anymore shell away, do it slowly & allow the chick to get out slowly & let the belly area dry. Topsy is cute. Best wishes.

Madcap,

Your Topsy is cute as can be. I just hatched the first silkie I've ever had today, so I don't know enough. I know the feet on mine look funny to me, but they look different than yours, too.

I think I'd help with Turvey, but that's just me, after my experience earlier today and wishing I had intervened sooner. I am sure the point will come one day where I'll intervene and wish I hadn't. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best. It's hard to sit and watch them struggle when you know something is wrong and don't know how to help.

I hatch around 150 chicks every three weeks for my personal flock.I think 2010 is going to be a good year for the chicken folks.I have seen chickens getting really popular here in alabama and georgia alot more poultry actions popping up.
