I figured out how to load pix on this one

Both if my babies will need shoes. Does anyone know if 'chick-chairs' would help or hinder?

I am a little disturbed that there is no poo on that white towel!

Madcap - there will be poo and plenty of it. It's like wishing for a toddler to walk - then you are like -"Why did I ever want them to walk?"

What do you mean by "chick-chair"? If you get boots on those guys today their feet should be fine by the weekend.

I have all 10 of my chicks that have hatched in the brooder now. One of the last ones to hatch is just a darling little cochin X silkie. She is all yellow and blue with dark striping near her eyes. I am hoping she will be splash, she reminds me of my splash cochin when she was just a chick but with more blue. Very pretty. Might be a keeper.

I could hear peeping in three of the 5 maran eggs as I took those guys out. Hoping they will hatch OK, these are a generation 2 of crossing my cuckoo with my black copper.

petriline, pbjmaker & Cornychick: Great! You've got chickies! That's wonderful! We want to see more pictures! Also, I've never seen quail chicks before (besides Button Quail), so looking forward to that; I imagine they have a sort of camouflage coloring.

Madcap621: Their out of the shells, good! On the "chick-chair" thing, I was so surprised to see that thread showing that homemade support device. Do you have the thread handy to show others here what it is, I'm at work & don't have that great idea saved on this computer. It looks like it would help a chick that is especially not active & help from them just lying on one side all day going numb on that side. Also, not good for their lungs, need to be upright or at least roll them to other side a few times a day. I am really looking forward to seeing you post pictures of them as them mature, I hear good things about the "shoes" to straighten the toes. I know you've worked hard at this; it gets easier with practice. Best wishes!

As for me, I thought that I heard chirps from the one incubator last night, but just shook my head & said to myself "don't fall for it again." We have a Blue Front Amazon & a parakeet that amuses themselves with suspicious sounds & dog barks to get me up & down to look out the window. Then just before leaving for work this morning & after turning eggs on the second bator, I heard it again; but just shook my head & said to myself "don't even, it's probably those Chickadees outside in the garden again." I went to the window & there they were, cute Chickadees everywhere. So went back near the bator & turned off the light nearby to leave; & again a chirp, but louder.

Well, I have my first pip for my Jan. 27th hatch. Can't wait to go home from work, to see if there is any more progress on those two eggs. I'm happy for at least the two, as the rest of the eggs had many loose air cells upon arrival. Will post pics when a chick or two are out of the shells, then they will spend at least a day in the incubator at 95 degrees F getting strong & ready for the brooder.

Walkswithdog: Those were good words you posted on page 44, #440 post. All of those things are what can give us hope, when things don't quite go perfect. Trying to follow tried & true rules are something that I will always shoot for, & hope for the best that nothing trips up the plan. Perseverance is my motto!

A side note on hobbles to go with the above post regarding leg problems, etc.: I've twice used a small cut piece of white pipe cleaner to hobble a chick with splayed legs. It goes from ankle to ankle by bending the ends in a circle around each ankle. It adjusts easily & does not cause any skin irritation.

Here are pics of my what has hatched so far. They are all similar in color so if you couldn't count - there are 10.

Hi save the faves, There are at least 3 threads going for mid Feb now. Three started the day I posted that my eggs came. I had 2 hatch-buddies. We have since joined another group of newbies and took Speckled hen along to "mother hen" us

[https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=287826] There is a thread called 'Valentines Day Hatch!!!', and and one called 'Eggs are Here' - Orphy & another 'Eggs are here :)Paganbirds and MagsC's hatching thread!!'

I think there may even be a couple more. I don't know how to get everybody together - maybe you can??

TO ALL OF THOSE WHO ARE STILL INCUBATING PASS JANUARY & ANYONE ELSE WHO JUST WANTS TO JOIN IN;
There are still January days left with chirps, piping, rocking, zipping, & leaps out of eggs. As this fun thread winds down & there's still incubating to be done, be sure to check out the next months thread 'FEBRUARY HATCH-A-LONG come join in'
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=288983

My second incubator started up with day 1 on the 23rd, so that hatch will be for Feb. 12th; then there's another 3 days later. I bet there's a lot of you out there who have recently started up the incubator, or put some under a broody. I've had a lot of fun here in January, have met some real nice people, had fun emailing with a couple of "hatch buddies" for the 27th & learned some things from you all. BYCer's don't seem to mind sharing their story & reading mind about chickens; besides it releives my hubby from having to listen to my endless "chicken talk." We hope to see you there!

Dd you notce the chick donut to keep the baby upright? I really like the PT tips.

I am also on a different computer. That was my favorite page, but I checked every link at the bottom, too, when looking for how to care for spraddle/splay leg. Here s this link:

[http://sites.google.com/a/larsencreek.com/chicken-orthopedics/leg-braces] Also see: [http://www.guineafowl.com/fritsfarm/guineas/problems/

I used the rehab box [picture at bottom] and will probably use w/these chicks. AND: [http://www.poultryhelp.com/spraddle.html]

More: [http://www.thecozynest.com/pictures.htm] I think this one has the pipe-cleaner hobble. It is temporarly down for maint., so couldn't check for sure.

The best I remember This pretty much includes what found when looking for 'splay-leg' treatments. Hope this helps.

Eunice

ETA: This might make a nice sticky. I have been devastated and in a panic when I needed guidance.
