I’m a little worried about my chickens that roost on top of the coop tonight.....poor girls already have frosty feathers and refuse to share in the coop space! I left the door cracked a bit in case they change their mind as the snow and wind continues overnight. I rounded up all my quail and put them in the coop. The chicken babies and gimpy are all snuggly warm with heat lamps in the shed and quail babies are still inside with the heating pad. so as long as the power stays on, they all should be fine. Only issue there is my inside brooder crate is not quite deep enough! I’ve already had 1 little one fly out on me!! luckily he bounced off my face and landed safely on the bar. (nowhere near the floor or the dogs!). The joys of wintertime!:he:barnie

Dang! I had a quitter today. One of the ones I was very hopeful for. It looks like I'm confident about four now.

I've also found a horrible, horrible way to keep the humidity up and help me out as well. My cat, Rue, likes to haul cotton balls and put them in her water dish. BRAND NEW ONES. Her water dish is filtered, and very clean. Instead of tossing out her balls and wasting them, I pluck them out and use them to keep the humidity up. Once they're dry I put them in her toy pile to use again. She loves it, I save money on cotton balls, and the babies stay moist.

I'd be concerned about germs if it wasn't for the fact that she locates the cotton ball bag wherever I hide it, fishes a new one, and drops it into her filtered dish. She's also the ones who LOVES the eggs. She refuses to leave their side, licks the eggs when I replace the water, and snuggles them. It's weird. *Shrugs*

:eek:You are going to introduce bacteria into your bator.
I would not be putting anything that touched anyone's mouth into my bator.

That's what I thought at first too. But last year one of my kids did a 'germ test' for science and used one of her toys. Turns out the filter on her water works well, and she only grabs the cotton balls with her lips. I feel okay germ-wise for now, but I keep an eye on things.
