#1- Eggs are permeable, meaning they breathe. Water evaporates from the egg during the first 18 days as the chick grows. If the humidity is too high the egg will not evaporate the water, and the air cell at the top will be filled with water, when the chick tries to break through the cap, they drown.. If the humidity is too low, the chicks grow very fast in the shell, all the water evaporates, and their bodies stick to the shell, and they cant break out to hatch. Also, Eggs grow in fluid, so when they come out they will inevitably be wet (if not they would stick to the shell and not hatch). That water layer allows them to break free from the shell and hatch out.
#2-Each egg is different, so they will breathe differently. Some are more porous then others, allowing for different rates of evaporation or absorption. Also the humidity will change in your incubator as water evaporates, so if an egg is developing slower than the others, and your humidity is dropped from evaporation that could cause some shrink-wrapping on the chicks. As far as why it only happens to the last chicks to hatch, im not sure. Someone else on here will inevitably know that answer..
thanks!! that's very helpful!!
i had a total of 5 Ameraucanas and 13 BCM!! i gave most of them away to 2 different people....and i kept 5 BCM in hopes of 2 hens!! now that i have only 5, i can socialize them all. it's VERY hard to socialize 13 BCM babies who all look alike!!
NOW i have 17 OE eggs in the bator and they're due to hatch on Jan 27th! i'm keeping ALL of them till i know which ones are roosters, then i'll give all the roosters away....then i'm gonna keep all the hens (if hubby doesn't kill me! lol).
