January Hatch Buddies?

As I get closer to lock down, I'm still trying to decide whether or not to use the egg carton. I know this topic has been kicked around a lot, but any thoughts on it are appreciated.

I saw 3 pips this morning (they are due today), this is my first time hatching!

I'm using cardboard cartons, but a few people told me (after I went into lockdown) that it is better to use styrofoam or plastic cartons. I am adding water about 3 times a day to keep the right humidity so I think they were right about the cardboard cartons absorbing too much humidity.
But hopefully everything will work out!​

It is day 21 and I have 3 chicks out, 2 pips
The chick at the top left pipped early this morning and tried very hard all day long to get out but couldn't, so after about 10 hours, and very little movement anymore, I decided to intervene and helped him the rest of the way. He is doing great, bigger than the other two (the other two zipped like pros and were out in no time)

I second your advice! After WASTING several hundred dollars on ebay, I managed to hatch 2 eggs that I bought on BYC from Cash's Blue Eggs in California. Lanae is great and takes the time to explain everything and stands behind her eggs! I got Araucana and E.E. mix eggs from her.

Very few of the ebay eggs even developed!

My ONLY exception would be if an ebay seller was a BYC member and had good feedback on both BYC and ebay.

I have lost count.

I think it's 50 some odd chickies. I set 107 eggs in 3 incubators from 4 different breeders, all shipped. I had the usual 20% or more that were infertile (clear at 10 days) 15% or so that died shortly after starting. 5% or so that quit a little later. I think there was 5% or so that were too dark to see thru so I put them in lock down to be safe. I still have 12 eggs in the bator. darn! Need to advertise! By the way..... I also have Icelandic lambs for sale.

This is the natural position that they lie in in the nest, I am told. If it were me, I wouldn't use the cartons because they can do more harm than good and aren't really necessary. Do lie something easy to clean and soft on the bottom though, like cheesecloth or mesh shelf liner.. Hopefully someone more experienced can give you their ideas on it.
