Japanese Bantam Thread!

They are very broody. At least my white blacktails are. Of course that was this spring. Now that I have the eggs I want them to set, only one is cooperating. They just turned 1 year old the 21st of August, so, maybe they're still trying to figure everything out.

Good Morning. Broody blacktail is hatching eggs today. So far, one chick out of 8 in twenty days. Will give her until Monday before I remove any unhatched eggs.

I currently have four Japanese bantams( 3 female 1 male) and with the winter coming I'm a bit worried for them. I have a big coop with about 100 chickens and would like to get some tips on keeping them warm. What is the coldest they can withstand? Will they fund enough warmth with the other chickens?

Get a cheap digital L E D thermometer and place it in the coop near the chicken roost, and where you can easily read it. If you suspect your flock may need extra warmth, get a livestock lamp fixture at your local feed store. A 60 to 90 Watt yellow or red bug lightbulb may be all the heat you need. Secure it in the coop so that it will not be disturbed by the chickens. Keep the bulb clean from dust build-up too. Infrared heat bulbs are available too. Also a variable (slide) dimmer switch can be handy to adjust the intensity of heat emmiting from the lamp.
