Japanese Bantam Thread!

My jap is maybe 5 or 6 years old, does she she still have a chance of going broody? She has only laid once ever for me. A friend that shows chicken gave her to me after she couldn't be shown anymore.

Oh my goodness, they are just gorgeous! Japanese Bantams are one of my favorite breeds! Recently lost 2 and I am heartbroken! They are so fragile, so sweet and just make the chicken world a better place to be. God Bless your little flock

She most certainly can still go broody. I have a 7 year old that just hatched out a couple Mille Fleur D'uccle babies. Give her a grower feed- or a 19% protein to get her hormones a kick start. Good luck!!

Show birds are not raised for egg production, and in some cases, may not lay at all. This looks like the problem with your's since it has only laid one egg in all these years, and never has gone broody. Broodiness is a natural trait in bantams, however, it can be lost when breeding for certain characteristics in show birds.
On the other hand, the best mothering hens are those which have lived a long life raising broods of chicks.

These LiL Japs are 6 weeks old, and the Roo and Hen have finally accepted Mamma and kids in the coop. They began going in at 4 weeks of age , but the two adults have had the coop to themselves ever since the other two hens went broody. I have one more hen with 3 (three week old) chicks that will soon be coming into the coop. She's trying to encourage them now, but they are so tiny, and leery at this time. I'll have to move the heat lamp to a higher position for the cold winter nights.

ok question...i have two black Japanese bantams. one laid an egg a day for ONE week and stopped. its been a month and no eggs what the heck?! they are about 30 weeks old

They do that. Egg production is like 160 (+) or (-) per year. So after 2 years you need to be raising replacements. Mine are only one year old, and I've got 5 pullet chicks coming on. Got lucky; when one was broody the other two were laying.
