Japanese Bantam Thread!

Pics
The unusual looks of the Japanese may be why they were so highly prized in Japan. They were an inheritance that was passed down from generation to generation, kept in the Japanese garden as another orniment.

Silver Laced Mom,

You should probably decide what you want to accomplish by getting chickens and then get birds according to your goal.
Commercial egg layers will lay 280 to 300 eggs a year.
Broiler chicks can be harvested at 8 weeks for broilers and at 12 weeks for fryers and roasters.
Most bantam chickens don't lay that many eggs a year.
let me know what your goal is and maybe I can guide you.
Terry

The problem I have is I have a small area in the backyard to work with, so I needed a small bird. I love the look of the japanese bantams. I am hoping for 5 hens out of my order, (it was a st. run so who knows) I dont think my family will be able to eat 250 eggs in the year? I dont know...

If my silver laced wynadotte hatches and is a hen, and I have a few japanese bantam hens, I think I will be able to do well in the egg department.

My order of japanese bantams will arrive on the 10th. I cant wait

All I am interested in is egg laying and pet-like. No broilers/fryers/roasters haha...

OK, here is a pic I promised. The top two are a barred holland egg and a buckeye egg. All of the ones on the bottom are Japanese Bantam eggs. I have one little black tailed white that lays the tiniest egg. My barred girls are bigger, and the big ones mostly belong to them.

I know nothing of her origins.. my parents got her a year ago maybe and since she stopped laying for this winter my dad was going to eat her, so I took her under my wing for bit. I'd love to know something about her!

Does anyone know of anyone with good Japanese Bantam stock? I had to cancel my order with Ideal Poultry...

Looking for day old chicks or eggs to incubate...prefer day old chicks
