Japanese Bantam Thread!

Pics
Im really loving all the photos! Thanks! I do know for sure I have one BTW but the other that came with it is looking really different. It has black speckling all over its body and the tail feathers are really short. They are 3-4 weeks old now.

What Im also realizing is I believe the nice lookin one is a rooster as is the porcelain bantam I got at the same time. I will wait to make sure but those two seem to have sprouted big combs over night...this really bums me out...

I've been reading this thread with interest tonight. I haven't made it through ALL 50 pages yet. I "accidentally" got 6 BTW Japanese bantams from Cackle (no really, they shipped me the wrong box of poultry). They are 14 days old on 5/25. What should I start looking for to sex them? How soon can I see signs of gender? Some have more black in their wings, a more upright tail, more black in their tail, etc. All have sprouted tiny combs, but all are the same size and color. I can't find any information on this and am hoping for some direction. I think they are lovely birds. They are very plucky and loud. They beat up my turkey poults for fun

Love your birds Caroline. I am really thinking the small btw with very short tail feathers is NOT a btw jap. It has to
be a mix of sorts. I will definitly be closly watching it for the next couple of weeks. Will be interesting to see what happens. On the other hand the larger prettier one looks exactly like your chicks. It has beautiful markings long wing and tail feathers and nice blotches of black. The small one looks actually speckled or spotted.

Anyhoo ...am so glad about this thread as I have learned quite a bit...thanks.
I truly love photos...pictures ARE worth a thousand words

I saw this today on another part of the forum but i thought it would be useful here since we were discussing mottleds

so you can breed mottleds x black - you would get all solids but breed them back to mottleds - would get you solids and mottleds

"*Mottled (recessive)

Solid + Solid = All solids
Solid + Mottled = 100% solids, all carrying mottled
Solid (carrying Mottled) + Solid = all solid, 50% carrying mottled
Solid (carrying Mottled) + Solid (carrying Mottled) = 75% solids [50% carrying mottled, 25% pure solids], 25% mottled
Solid (carrying Mottled) + Mottled = 50% solids [all carrying mottled], 50% mottled
Mottled + Mottled = 100% Mottled

Yippeee! My 5 assorted Japanese bantams should arrive in about 1 week! I'm so excited! Any predictions on the colors I'll receive?

I am new here, but I love all the information and help from all the members. I recently got 2 Japanese bantams and 2 Yokohama chicks from my feed store. The chicks will be two weeks on Sunday! I have a really good feeling that both of the Yokohama chicks are boys and both of the bantams are girls, but I'm not sure, just guessing. I was wondering if I did actually have two (or possibly more) males, would they fight? I was also wondering if the japanese bantams are good at laying fertile eggs, and if they go broody easily. Thanks!

They might fight, I have around 20-30 roosters in a pen (with hens of course) and there isn't too much fighting, mostly just chasing eachother around. They should get along just fine. Japaneses lay fairly well, and yes they do go broody.
