Blue tailed Japaneses are different, but pretty!

Hello, we have hatched out 8 buff Japanese bantams. They are about 2 weeks old and getting their wing feathers. Some seem darker than the others. Would the dark ones be the little cockerels? Or is it too early to tell? We are real new to this breed. Thanks!

Don't worry I don't think of it as picking on me. If I don't have the quality of bird to set an example of what is wanted in the breed at least I'm able to show something that you would want to look out for.
I just got my first eggs from them so now it's time to start hatching and culling.
Just y'all be warned I'll be back asking for advice as this is my first go around with any type of bantam.

Does anyone have trouble with fertility in their japs? I have a trio of BTW with 2 mottled hens in the group. 2 of the hens are laying (not sure which 2) but none of the eggs have been fertile. The roo is very short-legged, so I wonder if this doesn't affect his ability to...Idk. He also looks kinda fat, maybe he needs to lay of the crack (-ed corn

). I'd like to hatch some of these but can't if they aren't fertile

I have a buff pair and their fertlilty has been very good. My rooster does not have the extra short legs though. I am new at this though and don't really know what is normal for them. Good luck!

Yes I am having fertility issues. I don't know if the daylight is still a problem. Some breeders say that the short legs do make a difference. Many pull the fluff from around to vent to help out. And also that spurs that are too long on a short legged bird will also hinder his "performance of his duties." Several of mine gave me good hatches last year, so I'm hoping they're just late starters.

I caught him trying to breed one of the hens today and it didn't look like he hit his 'mark'. The hen was very patient with him though, so maybe that's a good sign. At least that one will put up with his attempts

I thought I read that generally there is a hatch and fertility problem with japanese bantams and 25% just don't hatch? Is that also true?
