You have to vent sex them or wait for them to exhibit sex specific behavior. Search sexing coturnix quail and youlp find instructions.

It seems the more threads I read on this the more confused I get. Can someone help me with what to me is a basic question - if I wanted to have a small breeding flock, which color varieties breed true?

Pharaohs breed to color, A&ms will as long as tbeyre over a rec white, certain golden color phases will, and thats about it.

My Japanese quails are all white... no brown spots or patches... they have black eyes and pink beaks and legs.. They are not that big.. so not jumbo.. any idea what they are called? I thought they were English whites.. but those have brown spots on their heads.

Found this thread so I thought Id throw my mystery hatch into the mix:





These pics are all of the same one. It is about 3 weeks old in these pics. The face is yellow but the chest has a bit of white feathering. The brown is mostly without bars and has a hint of gray coloring. Down the back is a row of standard, bared wild pharaoh feathers. It is very unusual looking. I think the mom is a white and the father either a golden or a pharaoh as I have no white males.

That yellow will molt to white, thats what all white faced chicks look like until their 6-7 week molt. Its just a tibetan tuxedo.
