Generally overall, ours lay every other day to every couple of days.

Javas are a dual purpose bird so you may not see that early laying and laying every day no matter what that you see in the "egg laying" breeds or hatchery stock. And the more often they lay, the faster they will run out of eggs to be laid over their lifetime.

Great! Sometimes I run into people who get upset because they want Javas that start laying by 4 months old and lay every day no matter what - then I have to try to educate them on the differences in chickens and why having a chicken that is not an egg-laying machine is still a good thing. We love our Javas, they are the only breed we keep.

I have Red Stars for production and NH and Delawares to make more when I need to. I am wanting to give Javas a try because they are dual purpose and great foragers. What color(s) do you have?

Mottleds are our main focus.

We also have some Blacks, couple of Auburn cocks - couldn't eat them, they were too pretty - and a non-standard color project going with birds hatched from Mottled stock.

Mottleds are what I want...do you ship hatching eggs? I use broodies for hatching so have to plan around the girls but If I can contact you when one or more go broody I would appreciate it. Alternatively if you know of someone closer to me...Northern California...who sells hatching eggs I would appreciate that information as well. I would like to avoid the longer distance shipping if possible but when you live where I live seems like TX is close enough

I think Auburn's are totally gorgeous and wouldn't mind finding out I hatched one at all. I understand what you mean about them being to pretty to eat.

I know how you feel - it took me a while to find anyone that had Javas they were willing to sell. At the moment I am still working on getting my breeding hens back to egg laying since they just finished molting and the days are so short now. Later next year I may have eggs avail but not right now. Lost a couple of hens this summer so am down to just 4 Mottled hens until this year's pullets are ready to breed.

Duane's not any closer than I am to you, but he has more breeding stock so may have more eggs available - he is one of the few people in the country to have been keeping Javas since the mid 20th century.

I would contact them now - there may be a waiting list already, especially with Duane Urch. If these don't work out, let me know and we'll see what we can find for you, but it may be a while since most breeders aren't collecting eggs for hatching just yet.

There are 18 Black Javas entered in the Tucson poultry show this weekend. 17 of them had cooped-in before I left this evening. Pretty awesome turnout!
