All the pictures of contemporary mottled Javas I see look a a little more ... spotted, with small white spots .... than what I see in these old photos from the beginning of the 20th Century:

Any one have any ideas about that?

Also, can anyone say much about the difference between mottled Javas from Privett vs Ideal vs Sand Hill? Being new to chickens this year, I thought I'd start with a few hatchery birds to get a sense of the breed before deciding whether to commit to hatching eggs from breeders.

I would buy from a breeder before I would ever buy from a hatchery, any hatchery.
And there is just too many fantastic Java Flocks out there (and every other chicken) that are painfully bred to SOP , so why got to a hatchery ?

Also: You are correct in your observation of these old photos, the birds pictures do look more splash-like rather than mottled.

Well, first we can search BYC and ALBC and see if there are any breeders close by you.
Then there is the issue of hatching eggs, have you considered hatching your own birds ?
You order hatching eggs and set them in an incubator...
If that is not OK, then I am here in Southwestern Washington, although I am pretty sure there are breeders in Pregon.
Let me look in the ALBC...maybe Saladin can help, also.
Hatching eggs from eliable breeders is the best way to go if you ask me.
Although if a reliable breeder is close you could drive to and pick up chicks that would be the easiest/fastest way to go.
Hatcheries ? No.
I would locate the best cornish breeder, get eggs, the best SOP type java breeder, etc and buy eggs.
That is what most all of us do.

This is the breeders list, check your state, did you get a book ?
With membership you should have received a book that has alot of (but no where near all of ) the rare breed breeders and are listed by state.

My neighbor gave me those two birds. He had some black java and borrowed a Rooster from another neighbor how recieved eggs from a Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. They were working on bring back Auburn Javas who have been extinct for over 100 years. These are the kinds of those roosters and the other Java ofspring that have shown color. I am hoping to get some great birdsfrom them.

I just joined ALBC a week or so ago, haven't received anything from them yet.

So far, I've only found hatching eggs from nearby breeders, haven't found chicks yet. But, I notice that some breeders mention either getting their stock from hatcheries (then they work on them), or they get hatchery stock to help work on their breeding program ...

Hatching eggs are not an option for me this year. I need chicks, and if I have to get them from a hatchery, I want feedback, based on people's experience, as to which one is a better bet for Javas: Privett, Ideal, or Sandhill. Would they have gotten their breeding stock from the same source? Who got them first/latest? If one of them got their breeders from a good source, and hasn't been breeding them for too long, chances are their stock wouldn't be all together horrible?

I don't need show quality Javas, just some that are close enough to breed to give me a sense of whether I want to commit to them.
