Java Thread

Hey life is good. 4/1-8/4 is just 4 months, or about 18 weeks. That would be a very early point of lay for any bird!

I don't start looking for any of my breeds to start before 5 months, and they generally all lay by 6 mOnths.

Hi guys!
Just popped in to post a few pics of new Java started birds first day in their big coop...LOVE the bright yellow soles!!!!!!!!!

I believe the chick on the left is a cockeral..time will tell.
I moved them out there in the dark last night, so did not check their fethering, but probably a male there.
Hope you all are doing well.
We are so very busy here, building our house, birds, chicks & canning/freezing from the garden.
Bye all!!

Joy, first of all, HELLO! How are ya ?
Second, I wanted to ask you about a picture you posted (above) next to the last photo is a hen, nice type, but does she have a huge long beak needing a serious trim, or is that a typo ???
Looks like her upper beak is curled way around and she cannot shut her mouth ?
Hope you are doing well!
Saty cool..
Bye!

No, I can see what you mean but that's a trick of the lIght or maybe the weed growing in front of her or both. I've had only One crossbeak or beak problem hatched out (not a Java but an EE) and I couldn't bear to let it live. I admire folks who can deal with special needs animals but with 3 kids and a job I am not one of them. You can see that same hen in the bottom pic link you posted and you can see her very normal beak from the front view.

Glad you are doing good and staying busy. It has been a hard year for hatching BJs for me. I sold one BJ hen and lost another pullet to a fox. Then, I only came out with 4 total from 3 hatches. Had to sell a few when their mom got eaten by fox, and the heat wave with 100+ temps for all of the last two hatches was horrible on my normally high rates! I can't use the slow/fast feathering prediction on my BJs as I can with my other breeds...so we'll wait and hope for hens!

They're laying!!!

Roughly 23wks old (perhaps a week or two older than that) - and three of the five pullets are LAYERS! Wohoo!!!

Got three eggs in one day, two the next day, one the third day, two the fourth and here we are at the fifth day and got two again!

Pullet eggs are so cute! Tiny, fully formed, but tiny (yolk in there is appropriately tiny sized too). Took four of 'em to fill out a two egg 'Mom-let' that I make for my kiddos!

Wohoo! Food independence (at least for eggs) here we come!

Though 24 weeks is about right, I personally prefer for mine to wait until they are older to lay. It gives the bird more time to fully develop as they should. Javas are a slow to mature breed. You can push them to develop faster with a higher protein feed (like 20% as recommended by some). I have found that if I allow the bird to develop more slowly on a 16% protein feed that I have a longer lived bird that is more productive in the long run. That's just my experience and my opinion.

What happen to all the Java people? The Java article by Monte was excellent as his writtings always are. I do find people put off by his writtings because they don't like his no-nonsense approach. Actually, that is what I like best. Where I'm from we call it honesty. I hope you all found it helpful.

Thanks for the information. It was really interesting. I am down to one mottled java. I really like the pattern that is emerging. I don't know if I will acquire more in the future due to space/coop limitations. I will see what we get built this fall and winter whent things slow down.
