Java Thread

CandleGal, welcome to BYC in general and welcome to the world of javas. My little ones are nearing a month old and they are a handful. Their coronation sussex mama really scolds them for their adventures. I will try to post some more pics real soon. They have wing feathers now and they are testing them out!!!

Guess who's got a Broody?!

Us!

One of our 14mo Black Java hens finally decided to hatch some eggs - of course, two weeks after I picked up additional chicks from Garfield Farm's Heritage Breed show. So I now have our original flock of 6 BJ (1roo, 5 hens), 25 Freedom Ranger meat birds (almost done growing with just about 10 days to go), 5 three week old BJ chicks in the brooder - AND NOW, a broody with five eggs under her on day 3.

We're up to our eyeballs in chickens! And no, it's not chicken math - it's more chicken multiplication!

Trouble is - I'm suspicious that the Garfield chicks are 1 pullet, 4 cockerals - four already have tail feathers and one is no where near feathering back there. In the Freedom rangers, those who feathered first ended up males. Anyone know if this is true with Java's? We obtained our original flock much older than this (about 6wks old), so I've not seen a Java grow from the start.....

1. Here's my new Auburn Java chick!
2. And here is the chick that emerged from another supposedly Auburn Java egg. Is this a color variation of Java, a mix, or another breed? Any ideas, anyone?
These were eBay eggs. The seller is suddenly no longer an eBay member.

Not having seen what Auburn Javas look like, I couldn't tell you. I can tell you that I am seeing some slight differences in the batches of mottled and now blacks that we have.

With chickens known to have recessive genes, no telling how those genes might show up.

Make sure and take photos of your guys as they grow. We have put split rings on the chicks to identify them and keep track of the different coloring patterns so that we can see what they look like as chicks and what they turn out to be as adults. I will be interested to see your chicks as they grow and see how they look at different stages.

Here is a link to Lyle Behl's website. It has a photo of chicks and adult Auburn Javas, along with their story.

None of the chicks pictured look like the second one pictured.

with my javas, if they have tail feathers in the first 1-2 weeks they are hens but its only 70% right.

That's interesting. A Java guy on a list serv is looking into the possibility of feather sexing newly hatched Javas. So with this second batch that we got this year, we did the feather sexing as he described and are now anxiously awaiting for them to grow up so we can see how accurate it is. They are only a couple of weeks old though, so we have what seems like forever to wait and see.

So I spent the last few days poking around different sites. Where can you get black javas? Any leads on where they can be ordered? I have found lots of mottled but I prefer black.

Most everyone that I know of are done for the year.

Where are you located and are you wanting local vs shipped eggs/chicks and are you looking for "hatchery" stock versus private breeder?

Thank you, NotAFarm and bnjrob. I was able to contact the seller and got my answer! It's a Crele Orpington! I'm thrilled and hoping for a girl. Crele Orpingtons are magnificent birds ... feel like I just got an early visit from Santa.
