Soooo.... I just transfered my quails (5 of them) into a coop about 24" wide by 4 feet. They had all been getting along splendidly in a small hamster cage (I know.... I know... which is why I had a coop built ASAP!). Only one pecking incident. Separated that bugger for a few days while the other coop was being finished.
NOW... they are all in the bigger coop. Within 2 hours, the one that HAD been aggressive was just as nice as could be. BUT the smallest one, that had been meek and mild (but very vocal), began chasing and grabbing anyone that came near! What on earth..?!? It was making "growling" sounds constantly. I was wondering if maybe it was a roo suddenly inspired now that there was room, but why chase EVERYONE?
They are all fully-feathered, and someone is crowing... at least one of them. They are all very active, curious, and make lots of different vocalizations.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what may be going on? I have separated the troublemaker. I will wait for a few days and then try to reintroduce him. (I'm assuming it's a him, as I think I heard him crow from his private suite...) They have been together since they were teeeeeny, so it's not like I just dumped a newcomer in with the gang.
I never thought 5 little quails could be such an issue!
