That's the biggest quandary about breeding, IMO, that you need to wait so long before making final decisions. In the end, you gotta do what you gotta do! If you don't have the room to grow them out, make the best decision you at the time, and just don't look back.
I WILL say (as I've said many times before) that I've had it happen more than once where I made cull choices too early, let some go that I later found out surpassed what I'd kept in quality. So....for me, I fit them wherever I can and wait just as long as I can before making cull choices. But, again, you have to do what you're comfortable with, to be sure!!
I have plenty of perch space in the coop...and half are now using it at night. If they all start using it at night I will have less pressure to move some out. They should catch on fairly soon I'd think.
Here are some updated pictures of my Blue JG babies. I have three obvious roo's, one obvious pullet, and one that I THINK is a pullet but I could use a few second opinions on that one. Also, she is so dark - would you consider her a Black JG? She sort of seems in-between the colors:
Am I a girl?:
Just thought this was a funny pic:

Also, any honest opinions on their quality are welcome. The breeders I got them from have apparently given me another chick that is not what it was suppposed to be, so I'm a little leary now.

Hi Chics! Right now it is 90 here in N. Michigan so I guess I'll find out how the Jerseys do in high heat!
I have a couple that same color...it is considered blue. As for quality....I will leave that up to someone who has raised them for a while...I'm a newbie to the breed just like you! I can't tell for sure on the sexes yet either....I'm just waiting til they get older.
Here's a strange JG question. Do your birds honk like a goose? Nellie has been giving out these deep, resounding honks.Everyone stops to look and asks if that came from a chicken. I know she's a chicken, but she sure sounds like a goose.
mine still just peep, they're 4 weeks old now at least.
