Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I'll try to post some pictures as soon as they mail me one of the ribbons the forgot, and since my JG is a diva she doesn't like the "paparazzi" taking pictures...

And in the bath tub she flapped around so much and broke off a piece of her feather..

Just want to share a little bit of Giant excitement. I have some that are due to hatch between this evening and the weekend and some more that ought to come on Leap Day. For those of you who do show, what have you found to be the optimal age for showing your pullets and cockerels? Since they take longer to fill out, I wondered if you target 8-9 months as showing age for the pullet/cockerel classes or somewhat older. I know with my other yellow-skinned birds that the pigment lightens as they get further into their laying cycle, but the pullets just coming into lay have the bright red wattles and combs the standard calls for. What's your balancing point?

Congrats, folk! PICS - NEED PICS!!!!!

Oldchurch - I don't know that you can really pinpoint a date; IMO, look at them for type when a minimum of 6 months; if they are looking good in type and are a close match to the standard, take them! I WILL say that my pullet was 7 months when she placed reserve champ american at the APA show I took her and a hach mate to - I spoke with the judge at length afterwards, and he told me she just simply hadn't "bloomed" yet, and that if she'd have been a few months older, she likely would have taken the class. It depends so much on the time of year hatched, what line they are from, etc., as well. It's priceless to be able to speak with the judge after a show, and most of them are more than willing to share details of why they placed your bird where they did. As far as whether they are red in the face due to laying, I don't know that this means a ton to a judge; they can tell by their physical exam whether a female is in lay or not & will judge her accordingly.

Finished another fair and my JG hen got Division Champion! (Of all the other American breeds) She almost got Reserve Large fowl but my sister Ameracauna beat her. Almost there!

I just hatched some Blue JG that I got from ebay.. stated they are Cinda Brent lines.. I am in Fl and so is this person.. never know with eBay though.. hoping they are good quality. Will post pics as the grow :)

I saw those the pictures did not look bad at all. Hope you have a good hatch with them. We are just as happy to pet/ layer jg's as the sq ones.
Have to warn you once you get them you will always have them. Take my hubby for a example.
" why on earth would you want big chickens that take forever to grow? Just think if one of those roosters got mean he would put a hurten on you.."
Now after almost a year later I asked this question -
With they way the government is going down the drain and my health with it. What breed would you want to keep out of all the ones we have if we had to cut back to 1 breed?
With out a delay he said "why the jersey giants!
I mean what other choice is there!? You got a great egg layer you can't beat the size color is nice to and
They are gentle giants that if need be would be great meat birds. It's a all in one breed."
;):D this is from a Wyandotte only guy. Nothing better then a Wyandotte.
All I could do was smile and nod my head. Now when my biting my nails till I get them blue jg eggs come in I get to quote him.
My jg eggs are hatching better then all the breeds olive eggers next.
