Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I have a question for all you Jersey Giant folks - is anyone interested at all in having a sort of "learning session" on this thread? I've been thinking about it for awhile now, and I think it would be fun, and a great learning opportunity for all of us if we posted two good-quality pictures of Giant birds, and compared them. It's a fantastic way to train your eye to look for things you may not typically look for when observing chickens.

If anyone is interested, let me know - I think how we can handle is that anyone wishing to submit a picture should get a new picture of the bird, and PM it to me - no one will know whose bird it is, and using a picture that hasn't been posted before will help for anonymity (sp?)

I think if we do this, the birds should be close to the same age and the same gender. Color doesn't matter. A good side profile picture is best.

If there's no interest, NO worries whatsoever, but we've done this over on the Marans threads with good results, and I thought I'd mention it here. OR HEY - I have another idea. If you'd rather not send a pic to me, I can ask another moderator who doesn't post in this thread to handle the pictures and posting them - this way, then I wouldn't even be "in the know" and I would offer feedback as well.

Again, this would be more for fun and learning, NOT to tear someone's bird down. Thoughts?

sounds like a great idea to me, I'm always willing to learn. I only have the one Jersey tho and everybody's seen his pics before. I have no way of breeding JGs yet and don't have a clue what QUALITY would be if I saw it. I keep coming here and reading tho cuz I think it's a beautiful and sweet bird, would love to have only them someday.

We all started SOMEWHERE, so don't give up!

If you think it's a good idea, then maybe try to get a NEW pic of your boy in a different location? Here's an example of a good side profile (obviously not a Giant) - you can see good detail in the feathering, comb, wattles, eye color, etc. So something like this, where you can see the shape from the side, would be most helpful for this little project. I'm going to ask mod Kelly (Happy Chooks) if she'd be willing to be the "keeper of the Giant pics" and not let anyone know who owns which bird, and ask her to post 2 pics at a time for us - that is, if anyone is interested!!

count me in... We have a show coming up in April. Austin has pick out a couple that he wants to take. I will sending photos of them to you Wynette.. This will be great. We are working on conditioning now. This is an open show meaning you pay to show your best. That is why I have him pick out only a pair. At the county fair we take a lot more. A remember THIS IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE to gain knowledge on Giants. NO ONE is out to pick you bird apart!!!
LETS ALL HAVE SOME FUN!!!
SHOW ME SOME GIANTS!!

I understand. I sure didn't know anything when I bought the pair (one died) I just got overwhelmed with temptation cuz I had grand-daughter with me when I went to Chickenstock. She LOVES any animal and the thought of taking a baby anything home just struck us! HA! I'm learning all about Grandmotherhood too now as my only son married a lady his senior who had 2 lovely children already. What a Blessing they all are.

I'm in so are we to pick just the best out of our flocks or what we think is good and one not sure so we can find out what everyone's thinks without the claws coming out. ( just kidding on the claw part)

I have to go back to where this was brought up.
Ok well if my not so smart phone will let me!

ok i got to read everything and it sounds great to me. just let us know what age and stuff.
I would not mind see 2 of each ~ pullet pol/ just started laying, hen, cockerel, roosrter.
I'm fine with what ever you want to do Wynette. You have a great idea!

Oh yes this sounds great. What a great way to learn and it's anonymous to boot! I haven't had Giants very long either so I have LOTS to learn as well. Give me a couple days to get some decent pics, haha that will be the hard part; getting chickens to cooperate for a good pose!

I'd definitely be interested as we have all seen my photos of my Jersey Giants who are not breeding quality, and I'd like to know what to breed for.
