Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I will not be showing. If all goes well, I'll pick up a few birds, and talk to a lot of good people. I heard there is 70+ Giants in the show. I have been to 2 shows in the last few months and there was 1 giant at one, and none at the other.

Regards,

Framac

hi i asked a ? on post 3504.... could one of the jersey giant breeders answer my ? please its important !!! the person i bought them from told me that i would be getting s q birds and if the yellow on the feet is there from birth then i have a bunch of birds i cant use or breed for show ckickens and i will have to start all over agian !!! thank you for your time john

Framac, I know the disappointment. At the APA Nationals, there was only 5 or 6 Giants. Two were clearly crosses to Langshans, so you really can't count them (in fact, they were DQ for type. Eye color was light, legs too dark, no yellow on the bottoms of their feet, etc.). Vaughn did mention that Mr. Rennolet (I may be misspelling his name) was going to be bringing almost 70 birds to the nationals, but that his father suddenly took ill in a very serious way, so he didn't attend.

BEST of luck finding nice stock for sale at the Giant nationals - please say hello to my good friend Sher Jennings, she'll be there.

want brahmas - It's the UNDERSIDE of the feet that should be yellow. Even in purebred, quality breedings, you sometimes do not see the yellow underside of the feet and these birds should be culled. It may be a bit early yet to see the yellow under the feet. To be honest, I don't go and check week by week for the yellow. I breed a lot, and so I grow them out, and when they are old enough for my first go-through of culling, which is typically 18 weeks, THAT is when I check for the yellow. Yes, the blues will have it as well.

John,

thanks in joining us in sharing the love for this beautiful breed!
I have only been raising show quality bird for the past 2 yrs. I have found that my chicks have yellow already on the bottom of the feet just after hatching. It doesn't matter if they are black or blue. I have no experience in the splash or white variety.
Hope this helps you

If you were trying to pick Jersey Giant chicks with yellow feet, wouldn't this be what you look for or is it too early to tell? Just want a second opinion. Thank you.

I think you have it! good example I wish I had some more photos to share about the feet! this is an old photo with other issues. But you can see yellow/orange NOT BLACK on the toes . this is what they should look like from the top I will try and get a photo of the bottom of the foot.

yes that would be what you would want to see :) but not 1 out of 20 chicks had yellow feet from day one guess you can see my frustration !!! all ours have whitish to pinkish feet . i hope with all my heart that they will turn yellow on the bottom of there feet but am afriad it has to be there from day one. i talked with Mr Bob Vaunhg and his chicks are yellow from birth so i dont think they will change as they age :( thanks everyone for your help john

Oops - still haven't gotten them off my camera....my bad. I'll do so soon! PROMISE!

I have to say as far as color of feet on young ones - I believe they do sometimes look pinkish rather than yellow at first. At least mine do. But, most definitely, they are yellow as adults. Let me see if I can find any chick pics....

well, this is the most recent chick pic that I have - this is a male at 4 weeks from this summer. You can't see a lick of yellow on the feet from this angle, but believe me - they are most definitely yellow on the bottom.

ETA - if you go back to post 3443, these are all from my line - look at the very last picture, you can see the yellow under the feet.

Folks, please be careful when purchasing what you are told are "show quality" chicks. There is absolutely NO WAY for a breeder of ANY breed to know that a chick can be show quality at hatch. It may have come from a proven show winner, and that is how it should be phrased.

Most of us have gone through situations where we've been upset or disappointed in what we got. It happens. You learn from it and move on. I began with stock from 3 different breeders...breeders who are very well known. I no longer have any of them in my breed pen. They just weren't what I was looking for. Was I disappointed? Sure. But, I learned what to look for and moved on. Everyone breeds for different things - ask a lot of questions from your breeders - most will be more than happy to tell you what they're working on. Some (um......................I'm guilty!) will likely talk your ear off!

One last word. I seriously don't think there are breeders out there with clear intentions of ripping anyone off.

Hey, Kari - LOVE your new av!
