Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

The heat was HORRIBLE here in Michigan, too. I'm actually a bit surprised that I didn't lose any Giants, but they all made it through, I feel exceptionally lucky in that regard!

Sigh. Don't check with me for anything this fall or next spring. We had a horrible heat wave this summer and even with shade, ample water, and places to settle down in the cool dirt my big-bodied Giants keeled over. I had been saving eggs to hatch, thankfully, and was able to hatch out some prospects. They're only about two months old, though, so it won't be until next fall that I set up any breeding pens. Darned Virginia summers with 85 degrees and a breeze one day and then three days' worth of 104 and 100% humidity!!!

Im so sorry to hear about that - I had to watch my birds carefully also... the ones outside did fine (with plenty of water and watermelon)... I lost alot of chicks though brooding in the garage even with doors and windows open. No more summer hatching for me.

I can tell you that Sher Jennings no longer has blues, and I believe she has passed along her whites to a few other folks as well. She's concentrating on the blacks.

I've had several folks contact me recently, and I do have hatching eggs avaiable but for a VERY limited time...I do not keep lights on my breeders, I prefer to work "with" mother nature rather than "against" her, and give my females a break from laying over the winter.

Will you be attending the APA national this weekend in Lucasville, OH? There should be a very good turnout there.

BTW, anyone else going to Lucasville? If so, let me know - I'd love to meet some BYC Giant folks in person!

No not going - I am in Georgia and Ohio is a stretch :)

Hi, folks - regarding district director of midest (Tim), he has shut off his old number (it was a landline) and is now using only his cell, which is (419) 409-0266. Also, his email is [email protected]

The Giant website will be updated with this info. soon.

Slinglings - she is lovely! I love that second picture - is that Leghorn full grown? I see you named her "Leila" - that is lovely, and I'm partial to it since my middle name is Leilani! (it means "heavenly flowers" in Hawaiin - my father was stationed in Hawaii when they were first married, and thier next door neighbor was a full-blooded Hawaiin named Leilani; they became fast friends, and mom always told her that if she ever had a girl, she would be named after her.)

The Leghorn is maybe 7 months old. She is my smallest hen, but seems to be the leader. ;)

Leila is Arabic and means "Dark-haired Beauty" or "Dark Beauty". My first three hens were sort of named after their color, and I struggled to come up with a name for a black hen that we liked..Leila is nice.

About 2 weeks ago, we had a chicken massacre at my house

! My husband's STUPID DOG got a hold of all my chickens (3 JJ's, a barred rock, and 2 speckeled sexlinks) and killed them all! So now, we have learned from THAT mistake, and have reinforced the chicken coop, and the built a dog run. Stupid dog......(I'm not a "dog person"). Anyway, we are going to try this chicken thing again.

I now have 6 chicks (2 are Jersey crosses, 1 Cochen, 2 white rock mixes, and a stripey one), and 4 laying hens (1 Columbian Wyandot, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and an Easter Egger). Today, I got 4 "Pullets".....

.....for free from someone on Craigslist, but I don't know what breed they are. Please take a look at the pics and let me know if you can tell. Hopefully none of them are roos's because I don't know how to sex them, and we're not allowed to have them where we live....but then again, I'm also only supposed to have 5!

The white and black on who's face is easily seen looks like a little fellow to me. Hope I am wrong.

Good morning, folks! I had a great time at the APA Nationals in Lucasville, GA this past weekend. I met with Bob Vaughn, president of the National Jersey Giant Club. Spent a good deal of time with him - he's so passionate about this breed, and he left me feeling even more enthusiastic about breeding them!

He brought a cock bird that sadly was in a bad molt, but an awesome specimen - just huge, and that nice, long, flat back that we look for! He also brought a hen, who was also huge, and who won best of breed. He even kindly removed her from the cage to show me a few things that were especially good about her. It was great! I did take a few pics of his birds, and will request his permission to post them here later.

Hope you are all well, and are making plans for 2013 breeding season! I know I for one am SUPER excited about it!

Awesome!

I wish all those big poultry shows' could come to California!!

I would be happy to go to the State Fair but my chickens are so used to 50-60F weather... not 100-113F weather...
