I think I will try it. This particular hawk is the issue . I have had thousands of them over the years come by. I live in the upper foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains so we get migrating and year round ones. I will plan on the line with flashers but it did not stop him from getting my white icelandic. I had it in a net pattern hoping to keep him out or in. he got in killed and ate her and got out. I did not have the flashers though. this was in my small run. My large run is like 2 or 3 production home lots so will be hard to do any kind of lines in there. Maybe t posts spread around with lines between them? I used to have a Turkey in the yard and I think that kept them away so maybe a big chicken or two . I hear there is someone in Norcal that raises them so I may try and hatch a few.Yep, they are white leghorns. If the hawks are deterred by the presence of a big rooster, it may work, but I don't have experience with hawks having any fear of humans or dogs, much less any chicken or turkey. But then again, I do live on some land in the middle of a very well developed city. City animals are nothing like their country cousins and are much more brazen. They couldn't care less that you are trying to get them off your trash can and will have no issue chasing you. But with your boys giving their life for the hens, that is a true good roo. 3 birds in 3 days is a rough one. Since you have a run, some say stringing flash tape or pie pans on fishing wire across the tops is a strong deterrent. With that high of losses, I doubt it'd hurt to grow up a few big roos just to see if they work for your purpose.
Sara, if my mom heard your offer, she'd be all for it! LOL She's suggesting that I sell a boy/girl pair to reduce the number in the coop. I'll be in town till Sunday, but don't hold your breath.![]()

I am going to try it. It can not hurt.LOL Nufie's and giants, shih-tzu's and silkies. What a better match! hahaha!
The Giants are some SERIOUS giants! They make my 6x8 coop seem so tiny even though there are only 4 of them in there with three leghorns. When the boys stand up really tall on the floor, I swear they can just look right out the window vs the girls who stand on the roost to look out for the human to release them for the day! I just LOVE walking up to the coop and seeing chicken heads peering back at me though the windows.
Cooper12, if turkeys kept the hawks out, a giant just might work! My dad likes to call them "turkeys". LOL I know their legs are longer than the legs on the BB bronze I raised for thanksgiving 5 years back... but they were so chunky that I think their legs got compressed. They were literally walking 50lb sacks of feed by the end. And speaking of feed, boy do they like to eat! But I mean, the boys are already around 11 lbs each.
