Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Good morning fellow JG enthusiasts...does anyone have photos of their 8 week olds or obvious gender differences in juveniles? Ours are now 7.5 weeks and the two we kept sure do look like pullets to me

Combs are still yellow, wattles barely discernible, and no pointy saddle feathers. Is it too early to see gender yet? I will try to post photos soon - moved them to their temporary grow out pen this weekend and getting a good photo will be a challenge

Thanks!

Hello all! This is my rookie year. I wanted dual purpose and choose JG. I'll be around a lot, I am sure.

First issue: I ordered 2 "boys" and 13 "girls". The boys came 10 days ago. The girls are coming in tonite. Will they be ok if I put them together or must I seperate them? I have been advised that I can put them together, but I am reluctant and you are the experts...

By now, the cockerel's combs should be beginning to turn red.

When you say the cockerels arrived 10 days ago - you don't mention their age; assuming they are 6-8 weeks (when you can tell for sure if they are cockerels), and that the pullets will be around the same age? As long as they have enough room, they should be just fine. They may squabble just a bit at first, but they should soon figure things out. If they squabble too much, it might be a good idea to have two feeders and two waterers - at opposite ends of the pen they are in, just in case some of the older birds try to keep the younger/newer ones away from the feed or water.

Well they were tiny chicks. I have no idea how to identify a chicks gender but the store said these were boys and girls would be a week to ten days later. I assume they were shipped immediately after hatching...

They're from a hatchery? I wonder why they are shipping them separately? That's odd.

It is odd. I ordered them through Countrymax, a rural chain store in upstate NY. I assume the hatchery they order from sent them seperately. I did ask questions and they said the hard winter has caused many delays. Not sure I believe that.

I chose to order from a store because my work schedule is a nightmare. The story will hold them safely for me for a day if necessary. The post office may not. And I am brand new so I could be wrong. I like countrymax but this was not part of the original agreement and I am agitated (a little. I used the extra time to build a coop!)

Gotcha. I have heard lots of folks talking about it being, plain & simply, a bad hatching year. I know I've had challenges in that vein myself. It's been frustrating, and I should have been long done with my hatching by now, but I'm not. I just wish these folks would simply be honest with their customers. I'd personally have much more respect for someone saying, "Gosh, I set 100 eggs and only got 70 to hatch, but I'll get them out to you just as soon as I can." than saying a hard winter caused delays, but - maybe that's their way of saying the same thing.

I picked up five 1 week old JG and have them in their aquarium home. The day I picked them up I sold 31 of my babies. The next day (SURPRISE) 5 of the eggs that I thought were goners decided to quit playing possum with me and hatched! I called the lady who bought the 31 and she said she was fine and didn't think she needed 5 more right now. (She originally only wanted 20, but couldn't decide on which ones, so took them all). So, when my 5 surprise babies were 5 days old, I took them out of the brooder and put them in with the Giants. There wasn't even a nudge or a peck. The tiniest one of mine ran up to the largest one of them and right under it! I laughed. Everyone stood very still and didn't make a peep. I watched for about 30 minutes while working with the older ones in their grow out pen. Nothing. It was like they knew each other and was waiting for them to "come home". It's been a week and a half and the size difference is pretty drastic to me! I'll have to get some pics and show you. But, the giants are truly gentle and they seem to even want to protect my little ones. When we come to change out the feed or water, all the little ones run to hide behind the big ones and they just stand stock still like, "If I don't move, you won't see me". They are cute fuzz balls that are starting to have little tips of their wings and such poking out. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed they feather out nicely. And with their size already, I'm hoping for some big 'uns!
