Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

My chicks are 2-5 weeks old. How long do you think it will be before the needs a roost inside the coop? How long before I need nesting boxes out there? I could use extra time, but I don't wanna stunt their growth or anything...

I found mine being curious about roosting around 6 weeks. But that said, you don't have to have a formal roost. A 2x4 laid on it's side will work for several more weeks. Or propped up on a brick. Even a large branch will work just fine for a while longer. I find they don't want to be too far up just yet. So you have more time.

As far as the nests, I think you have up till around 5 months. Probably best to get them ready a tad earlier than that so they have time to explore them and get used to them. And make them bigger than average. I would go for 18" by 18" if possible. My coop came w/ nests that are the standard 12" by 12" and while she fits in there and lays, her tail feathers are always frayed because she really wriggles herself into the nest. I wish I had a larger nest for her. I did also put up nest box curtains which I thought were ridiculous at first. But she loves the privacy. If I have to be out and pop my head into the coop, I'll say hello to her, she'll poke her head out, look at me, mutter a few words and pull her head back in like, If I can't see you, you don't exist. It's funny.

Sorry I did not see that you had Maria's stock.  Hope you find another quality breeder.  I am not sure if the photo's you have are current or not and you likely know way more about giants than I do, but I can tell you that I was way less than impressed with my giants for quite a while, but when they came into their own, they were awesome.  I also had some from a breeder in Texas and would not reccommend those birds or that breeder.  Night and day difference in the birds, but those were much the same they took forever to get past the juvie uglies.   LOL

Good luck
I'm looking into getting some can you pm me and let me know who to stay away from?
