Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

OH. MY. LORD. I have just been reading this thread as I was curious about the breed. And then a funny thing happened: I saw photo after photo of blue/ lavender JGs and thought 'hmm, that looks like my brahma, Khan'. And then I had a lightbulb moment...

Khan is my biggest chicken, she is also the youngest. She is bigger than my other brahma, Ripley, by quite a bit. In my mind this didn't make sense, I though perhaps she had a thyroid problem or something like that! And then I remembered that the lady I bought her from also kept JG's. I'll put a photo of Khan here and you can give me your opinions if you don't mind? Is she a brahma x JG or what? Many thanks in advance!

Does she have a pea comb or feathers on her legs? I looked at getting some in the past and if I remember right, they have pea combs and some feathers on their legs, while JG's have single combs and clean legs.

Hi! Thanks for replying- yes she has feathers on her legs, but i think she has a pea comb also?! The pea comb is the ridged one isnt it? I wondered if she was a brahma x jersey cross. She is SO massive.

Someone has offered me a couple of JGx girls (

) and I'm finishing up my quarantine/brooder pen. When I started the pen it was just going to be a brooder/grow pen for spring chicks, but now it's going to house a couple of BIG girls for a few weeks.
Question - how much space would 2 grown JG's (assuming that these grown girls are most likely not quite full JG size) need for a month? The crate I'm using as the coop is about 4' square - that should be plenty of space for a small roost and a little walking around room inside.
So - how much 'run' should I plan on - since they've only got to be in there for a month?
And - is it ok to use a tractor as a quarantine as long as I keep it on the far side of the yard from my original flock's coop?

Feathers on legs and pea comb sound like Barhama. JG's have neither, but crosses can have feathers on their legs and a pea comb. Do think Barhama's should be pretty large on their own though, but in a mixed running flock, any cross is possible.

This is her comb- is it a pea comb?
Yes it is, JG's have a single comb (there's a good article on combs somewhere on the site). Does she have feathered legs? Brahmas have pea combs and have feathered legs. JG's have Brahma genes in them.
