Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Herman, I have chicken wire over the top of all of my runs. Better safe than sorry. I've heard that some hawks will attempt to pick up a goose! If they get their talons in, you're talking puncture wounds...which could cause infection...

I will say my runs are not the Taj Mahal by any stretch. The chicken wire has, over the years, stretched from the heavy snow in the winter, and so it sags down between the 2x4 that we have up. But, it's safe, and the chooks don't care what it looks like. Not everyone can cover their runs, of course, it's not mandatory, but I'm away from home enough that it would drive me crazy not knowing if my poultry was safe.

This guy was sold to me as a black australorp, but I soon noticed the yellow on the bottom of his feet. He's about 6 months old but I was wondering if he looks like a giant to you guys???

Well, I am going to get the first of my Jersey Giants this Saturday. I will be getting 1 trio that is laying and breeding, 1 trio that will be old enough to lay and breed in a couple months, several youngsters that are around 9 weeks old, and a couple dozen hatching eggs. The birds are all black, but some of the eggs will be blue. I was only going to get 1 trio, but she said the oldest rooster has curled toes from an incubator temp spike, and I wanted a back up in case I found out I should not breed the curled toed roo. I have a question though, will I be able to tell the blues that hatch from the blacks that hatch, just by coloration at birth?

It's difficult to tell from the pictures - are his eyes very dark, almost black? If you can get a better picture of him from the side so we can see his conformation (shape) that would make it easier to tell.

CONGRATS!!! Please post pics of your new birds - we love pics!

Here are two blue babies:

They can look darker, and note the feet color - with mine, they begin like this and end up yellow on the bottom and dark slate on the shanks.

I ordered 5 Jersey Giant chicks and the eggs went into the brooder yesterday. I stuck with the blue since there was issues with the "lavender". He does sell lavender Orps...

i have raised Giants for 15 years. They are mostly quiet and lay well in the winter. There is less danger of a fox taking one but they have done it. :O)

My JG did well at a show I went to recently in Feb. Reserve Champion American. (A beautiful white Rock won Champion again)
