They are loud, but I like the sound of peeping. At first I was worried, are they hungry? Add food, they talk about it. Change their water, they talk about that too. Raise or lower the ego glow, they talk about that as well. Sit down and visit and they all run and talk to you. Leave the room, yep, they are yelling. Hubby loves them already, so all is well.

I don't want to scare you but just wait till they grow up. JG's have the gift of gab and they LOVE to talk. You are gonna love these gals when they grow up.

I'm cracking up over here. I told hubby that we were getting giant birds because they are calmer so should be quieter than our gabby Polish gals. Won't he be surprised!

My Jersey converses with me. Always says good morning. And if I raise my voice to her, she yells back. I really need to get that on video.

But that said, she's a total mellow bird. Digs up a rose bush every once in a while. But you will love them. Full of personality.

I just put 22 Jersey Giant eggs into my bator!!!! Can't wait!!!! So happy for you Mrchicks!!! They are loud and beautiful!! Its funny how chatty they are. I have 11 out in the coop now that hatched back in June. They love to tell you about Whatever lol Here is a pic of my Roo!! Isn't he something!! LoL he sure thinks he is!

Hey everyone, first time poster here. I took the time to skim through about 120 pages of this thread and have really learned a lot of useful information.

I couldn't help but notice that hatchery birds are not very liked on this forum. I can see how some people may end up with poor quality birds from companies that care more about profits than quality of product. I ordered 10 black JG (5 pullets and 5 Roos) and 5 Black Star pullets from a hatchery in June. I have not had any problems or complaints. My birds are very healthy and growing fast.

So my question; the hatchery I ordered my chicks from was Murray McMurray, can I expect quality birds from this hatchery or should I sell off my Roos and keep my better looking hens and find a quality Roo?


These are my birds they are all 9-10 weeks old. I couldn't get them all in one picture.

This one here is the destruction of my garden. Here he is seen eating one of my tomatoes

I got all my BJG's from Cackle Hatchery, and have no complaints at all. It really depends on what you want them for. For show quality birds, hatchery is not the best route. For a dual purpose meat and egg bird, hatchery birds are fine.

I'll chime in with my 2 cents worth. I have a hatchery JG. LOVE HER!!! She maxed out at 8.5 lbs so she's not full sized and probably not the best example of a JG. But I just have a few hens in my backyard. No rooster. My chickens are pets and I have them for eggs and pest control and will never breed them. So for me, being able to pick up sexed birds, vaccinated, and right when I'm ready to tuck them under a broody, getting them from the feed store works for me.

But if you are going to breed them, show them, etc. I can see how you'd want to get quality JG's from a breeder so that you get really healthy, show quality birds that meet the standard of the breed. Especially, with the JG's. Because they are so big, you want really healthy birds. You wouldn't want some with skinny, little legs that can't support their weight or some other character flaw.

Again, just my 2 cents worth. I know I'm in the minority on this group by having a hatchery JG. But she still exhibits all the characters of a JG. She's chatty. Can be loud. Wicked smart. And just a hoot to watch in the garden. So I enjoy following others who have JGs.

Jersey Roo and hen at 16 weeks. I am pretty sure he killed my silkie so he is treading on thin ice.

And multipurpose bird is what my aim was when I ordered these. I'll have to admit though after looking through this thread and seeing all the amazing birds I wouldn't mind going the breeder route. I raise boer goats and have show quality goats so I generally want animals of good quality that follow the "experts" standards. For now I think I will keep all my birds except for a few Roos that I'll cull when they mature. I may try finding some quality breeder birds when it comes time for replacements.
