srry skipped ahead but i would like to get some jgs too and wondering if there are any breeders in southeastern ohio area that breed them i like having a mixed flock of all different sizes so far smallest i have is a sebright pair and biggest is a barred rooster been thinking br but he is a yr old and still growing he was a lil over 2 feet tall last time i measured but im positive he has grown since then do jersy giants come in barred (i need to get a pic of this guy next to my other standard roos cuz he is way bigger)

I went out to greet my new Giants, in the daylight. Funny, the one Alpha roo just kept eyeing me, and then, "bumped," me! I was being watchful, as the seller told me he had done exactly that with her, a couple times. I went to pick him up, and he ran away from me!

I fed yogurt with their feed. They were not at all interested in that. It is really cold out today, so I left it anyway. It won't go bad, in this cold! They are not liking the feed much, either. The seller told me she tried feeding them poultry feed, but they preferred scratch. I dunno .... but I'm thinking they are trying to hold out, and wait for some scratch!

Which, they are not gonna get! I sprinkled oyster shell dust on the feed, and, as I usually do ... left out a dish of oyster shell and grit. I always offer those two things, free choice, as I do with poultry feed.

I know a move is stressful for chickens, so I added AviaCharge to their water today. I figued that I would do that for a week.

I noticed the feet on the 2 roos ... Well, I didn't pick them up and examine them, but it is quite noticeable that one has dark legs and feet. The other one has obvious yellow showing on the outside edges of his feet. I know the SOP calls for yellow on the bottom on the feet .... but what about this?

Another thing I noticed, on the Alpha roo ... it looks like he has some copper leaking on his shakles. I don't know the correct term ... I think it is coppery looking though. Is this a fault, or is this common or expected?

I am sure someone else can address this better than I can. Your birds need laying feed and you use the scratch as a treat. They have to have their protein and the other good things in the feed.

I use Ace-HI lay feed and I am very happy with it. The feed mill has been really attentive to their product. They contacted me when I complained about getting moldy feed from one of their dealers. They gave me two gift certificates and I got 100 pounds of feed for free from another dealer. He stuff was pristine and I am delighted with the service.

I have to tell everyone here that all of these roosters are so beautiful. I want one so bad, but the city will not allow it.

I love my JG hen. She started laying when she was 5.9 months old. She has constantly laid for me through the winter and I do not see signs of her slowing down. I really am surprised that this breed is not used more. If you want meat and have plenty of room…then be patient.

People rush too much and expect animals to be machines. These gentle birds do well in condiment. They are cold hardy, and as far as I can tell, they are good with the other breeds They seem to keep an eye on things in the yard. They are big and that intimidates most daytime predators. I think they are the perfect bird to have around.

I see that your 8 month old cock, Jethro, has the brownish color on his back like my 8 month old cock, (pics @ post # 32), do you know if it will turn black after molt or stay brown.

I'm just trying to learn about the breed and see what I have to work with, and see where improvements need to be made. Do I need another cock? Or use the one I have? I will be setting eggs for hatching soon and don't want to unintentionally mislead people.

Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated.

Katy the blues must be the same as the whites. All my blues legs are a dark willow or slate color with the yellow feet underneath. The splash have more of a lighter willow than the blues but its still what I call slate colored

Between these 2 roosters, I see alot to work on. I don't know if I will use them. I will have to wait and see what I get with my other (growing out) Giants. In the SOP, the plumage coloring (on black) says:
PLUMAGE: see description of Black plumage color on page 34.
(page 34):
PLUMAGE: Surface -- lustrous greenish black. Undercolor - (except where otherwise specified) dull black in dark legged varities; slate in yellow legged varieties.

I just wonder about the yellow on the sides of the feet of rooster # 1, and about the brownish coloring on the back of rooster # 2. One reason I wonder is, if you recall where I posted the SOP points, the back is worth 12 points (6 for shape, 6 for color), and the legs and toes are worth 8 points (5 for shape, 3 for color).

Here is a copy of that previous post, with the points.

I just found (on page 39 of the colored SOP book) the points system for the SOP. "The General Scale of Points." Anybody interested? There are 2 sets of points. One is for white and one is for other than white. The ones with * are points for, "other than white." The only difference in these, from the white, is that the shape and color are different points, but the total in that category is the same. The other points (without the *) are the same, white or not. ..... OK, here are the 100 points broken down:

SYMMETRY: 4 (shape)
WEIGHT OR SIZE: 4 (shape)
CONDITION AND VIGOR: 10 (shape)
COMB: 5 (shape)
BEAK: 3 (2 for shape, 1 for color)
SKULL & FACE: 4 (3 for shape, 1 for color)
EYES: 4 (2 for shape, 2 for color)
WATTLES: 2 (shape)
EARLOBES: 4 (2 for shape, 2 for color)
*NECK: 6 (1 for shape, 5 for color)
*BACK: 12 (6 for shape, 6 for color)
*TAIL: 8 (4 for shape, 4 for color)
*WINGS: 8 (3 for shape, 5 for color)
*BREAST: 10 (5 for shape, 5 for color)
*BODY & FLUFF: 8 (5 for shape, 3 for color)
LEGS & TOES: 8 (5 for shape, 3 for color)

So, it looks to me like that back is really important! 12 points there!

ETA: under SHAPE: BACK: Rather long, broad, nearly horizontal, with a short sweep to tail. For the hen: Rather long, broad it's entire length, carried nearly horizontal, ending in a short sweep to tail.

COLOR:
COMB, FACE, WATTLES & EAR LOBES: Bright red.
BEAK: Black, shading to yellow toward the tip.
EYES: Dark brown.
SHANKS & TOES: Nearly black with a tendency towards willow; black preferred. Underpart of feet, yellow.
PLUMAGE: (for blacks) lustrous greenish black; undercolor dull black.​

My JG 4 eggs from JS Seed arrived intact yesterday. They are not as large as I expected. No larger than my RIRs lay. They were cold from the USPS truck ride. Let them "rest" big end up over night, and set them at 5:30 this morning. Incubator stays between 99.4 and 100.7. Humidity in the room is 40-50%. Still looking for a hygrometer for in the bator. Heading to Wal-Mart after work.
