I have some of the true black/blues, they have the green/blue/violet metalic sheen. I'd have to enter them in shows as a black jersey giant (BB); although, they are from blue stock.

I also, have a blue that is as you describe, what I personally call a "charcoal" though there is no such label, but if I entered him in a show if he didn't have the red hackles, I'd enter him as a black, because he would never win as a blue. He is missing the metalic sheen and has a cast of blue. If I wanted to pay the expense of having his genetics run he might look like (BBb instead of BB - Black or Bb - Blue).

Your boy/girl would show the metalic sheen by 5-6 weeks if it is going to show up, so look at it in the sunlight if you haven't already. Mine stay indoors in the Barn until they are about two months old. I have a sparrow hawk that lives locally and visits everyday to swipe a few of the sparrows that eat my feed. Although he has never gotten one of my chickens they run whenever they see him coming. He must have tried when they were younger.

I know the wait is tough especially around day 18. I'll say a prayer that you have a very blessed hatch in Jesus' Name. I figure that a chicken is just as valuable as the sparrow and he watches over the sparrows, even if my local sparrow hawk does get one a day, still not fast enough for me, but I hate to shhot Gods creatures unless I am going to eat it or it happens to be caught in the act of violating one of my feathered, four-legged, furry children.

I just recieved 5 black Jersey Giant chicks yesterday with my order from efowl.com. I bought them along with Buff Orpingtons and Silver Laced Wyandottes. They are really cute, everyone on my facebook loves them the most. I just had a couple of questions. Supposedly all of the chicks are the same age but the JGs are quite a bit smaller. Is this normal? Also they are supposed to be "Black" Jersey Giants, but they have solid white chests and sparse white fuzz mixed in with the black on their head. Is this in line what your BJG chicks look like or might I have gotten another color? I am just curious. I am completely new to chickens and I love them no matter what! I can't wait until the "gentle giants" grow up.

Here is a pic of one of the chicks:

your baby is beautiful, but I have never seen the white chest, only yellow down, but make note I don't have any BJG except from Blue lines; maybe there is a difference. He has the yellow on the feet, so that is very important. 2001 SOP says a disqualification is: Bottoms of feet showing complete absence of yellow.

That is a very cute baby! It does look a lot like mine with the specks of white on the head.

Silly question: When they get their feathers are they all black or will they still have other colors also?

2001 SOP says if he is a black, a disqualification is more than 1/2" of positive white showing on surface, or two or more feathers tipped or edged with positive white.

It should be totally black when it is grown. I am actually kinda wondering about this chick. The eggs came from a breeder in Utah, but I am wondering.... I am watching the legs and feet change color. Pure JG should have yellow on the bottoms of their feet, so I will wait and see.

So, anyone wanna hazard a guess as to sex? I gotta say, I'm leaning towards roo, but my other Jersey of the same age has a bigger comb, so IDK ????
