That is what I was thinking. I am learning a little at a time. The one thing I have gathered is that the Lav gene has to be introduced, and it does not come from the Blue/Black/Splash birds.

Hmmm, if there were a color outside the norm in any chicken and can be repeated over and over, that to me, would be a new color. IMO, if you think you have a lavender, and can actually produce offspring reliably lavender from that lavender chicken, I would say lavender. The problem is defining lavender vs. dilute blue.

Jack Russel Terriers were not considered a pure bred registered AKC until the body type was consistent. I'm thinking a lavender would not be lavender until it's consistently produced.

IMO, genes are only 100% in clones.

I have a chick that supposed to be a splash, but the wing feathers are growing in a "slight blue(?)" but it's not like the blue of the others. I will have to get a picture by setting up a true comparison where the camera hasn't altered the true colors in the pics. Ill have to figure out the right lighting and a true white background to do it. Any suggestions on what kind of lighting will work to give a true reproduction? I don't want to alter the picture after taking it.

The LAV gene is an albino-type mutation; the wild type (LAV*N/LAV*N) and lavender (LAV*L/LAV*L) are both just as capable of showing up in the Jersey Giant as any other breed. It seems as though in the Black JG the albino mutation was labeled as "sport white". If this sport white had been worked with the same as in the Orpingtons it may have been carried toward a lavender or it may have been a splicing of codons on totally different genes. I haven't been able to find the white sport genetic code, thus far, but I will keep looking.

Someone got the lavender mutation and ran with it. It is still a work in progress and for now there are inbred issues that many of the breeders are trying to dilute with other incrosses. So don't worry ladies and gentlemen, we will one day have lavender JG's that are laverders instead of diluted splashes. But in all truthfulness, the lavender's three mutations arevital codons that curently are not expressed in chickens, but when they occur in humans and mice they turn out to be associated with neuro defects, which we do not desire.

You have a very good point about the consistency of the expression, but the LAV, 3 codons are on gene 7. If our diluted blue splashes look lavender, but are on different genes or affect different codons, by the science world we cannot call it lavender. We might have to call it the silver or self-blue or lilac to distinguish it from what has already been labeled as lavender to keep confusion down. The genetic test would confirm the truth and deceit is not what we want to be caught in at least not intentionally and even professionally it is embarrassing as me having to go back and admit my ignorance about my diluted splashes.

I don't understand any of that. What I do understand is that the Lav gene must be introduced. Look at the Lavender Orpington project .... Anyway, that is the same way that I plan to intoduce the Lav gene into the Jersey Giants. At least that way I will know they have the gene, and there will be no confusion with the lighter blues or messy splashes.

I have asked blackdotte and received his answer. It is simply impossible to get lavender from B/B/S. He knows what he is talking about, and I am going with that.

These are my two new JG chicks! I need some names for them okay guys ... so give me some good'ns!
Black Jersey Giant Hen. My friend gave her to me, she ordered sexed pullets so I know she is a hen.

Splash JG chick I got from a breeder. He gave her to me. She is suppost to be a hen, but we're just guessing so we'll see.

I'm thinking Shadow (black) and Apollo (splash) I always look at my unnamed chickens one day and a name pops into my head and that's what they are.
