I agree totally I love reading all the post on this Jersey Giant thread. I think Wynette is doing a wonderful job talking about the in/outs of this breed. And I can't wait to meet so many of my fellow Jersey Giant lovers at the Nationals.

I'm on the fence about caponizing, but I have heard the same thing about the results. When I think of the beautiful males I had to give away!

Wynette, I just wanted to say that, while I don't really post, I do follow the thread, and I think you're doing a great job as a leader here. Look for me in my JG shirt at Crossroads! I hope to pick up a couple of nice birds then! (Blues, I have white and black)

Alright, you guys are so sweet!

Thanks, but again, it's for sure a group effort - just as with any breed - to move forward! I like that we're able to talk about the good AND the bad here, without folks' undies gettin' in bunches!

Why would you want to propagate the genetics of a mean bird?

If it's for meat birds, I wouldn't think it would make a difference as they're not around long enough to get all that nasty...?

When is crossroads ?
I really would like to go to it.
I almost forgot about it with all the work we have been doing lately.
Yep I might have to learn how to do that I would love to see those big boys out free ranging in my field.

Yes I agree with you she does a great job and very truthfull.
I'm very happy to know her on here and have her as a mod too.
Would love to meet her and see her chickens in person too.
I keep seeing her long crowers and keep telling myself no no and no you have enough, but boy would one or two be nice to have in the ee coop.

I really want to go to Crossroads and could do it in a day...it would be a LONG day, but could do it. Hmmm...guess I'll have to look at the calendar and see how free we could get for the day! Oh, my DH will LOVE this - it will be a huge opportunity for a deposit into the marriage bank, as he calls it!

I got some Black Jersey Giants chicks from Bobbi Porto this past march. I have way to many roos. Will be selling some at the nationals. Maria Hall gets first pick after that rest is for sale to anyone. Let me know if any one would be intrested in some of these roos. I have decided to keep only the Blue roo all the black are going. That will give us (1) black form Bobbi, and (1) blue from Bobbi and (1) from Robert Vaughn. Thats (3) total roos that enough. We have only 7 hens (4 black and 1 blue) from Bobbi and (2) black from Mr. Vaughn. This will be what we will be starting our show lines from. Also include any that Maria Hall will trade us during the State Fair.
I cant wait to see how this line will do.

Wish that I could go to Crossroads. Sounds like a great place to see chickens and meet some nice people!!
About caponizing-wish that I had the guts. I've read that you can loose 50% of the birds. And you use no analgesic. Don't tell me that they feel no pain!!!!
My focus is sustainable meat birds that are also cost effective. I was hoping for a bird that grows more slowly than the Cornish but puts on the muscle. Mame1616 was not aware that they would not survive past a certain age.
I don't like these cornish(x between light and dark) The cockerels are mean, they don't want to free range and they eat like pigs. As a matter of fact, that is what we call them-the pigs!!
We will butcher in the next 2 weeks and 5lbs(processed) will be a good size Does anyone have any idea how long it takes the JG to get to 7lbs live weight?
By the way, a broody just hatched my first JG. I am so excited!!

I'm not trying to propagate the meaness. I've only seen two other dark Cornish besidesmy own and they were both very mean. This rooster of mine is only 10 months old and he has little spurs...however he ran up on me fm behind and swiped at my calf. The weight on him alone running into the back of my leg bruised me from shin To ankle. Left a nice gash.
Anyway...I just want a good meat bird...
