I don't think it's an indicator of anything, except dominance. That said, just because he's establishing dominance does NOT mean he'll be nasty or aggressive.

Hi all, It was suggested that I post over here to get some thoughts about these JG I got from a breeder. You can see my original post and the replies here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6883102#p6883102

Edited
to add: The replies have not been very positive about these hens, and that maybe they are not all they were made out to be, however, I find that hard to believe since this is a reputable breeder.

We have 2 JG hens, they are about 1 year old. We got them from a local breeder (arizona), they are not hatchery birds and have some of Maria Hall's line in them.

My question, when do these get to full size? Honestly, the majority of my flock have out sized them, including my 5 month old EE's. The only hen smaller is my Silkie.

I do understand they are slow to mature, but can anyone give me an idea on what to expect?

Thank you!

Are you sure they are jg's even if it was from a breeder? The reason why~
My first one came from a breeder around here and ended up being a cross. It never got large and my wyandotte's were bigger and fuller.
I have also seen australorp's sold as jg's.
People all the time get Australorps and JG mixed up.
What color are the bottoms of their feet?
They don't look pure to me ,but I am new to them and this is just my 2 cents

I think so. They are from Dyer's Giants here in Arizona. Has anyone ever heard of that breeder. My husband said he had beautiful Giant's at his home when he went there to purchase these 2 a few months ago.

Hi, I've been scrolling thru the pages of this topic hoping to find an answer, but finally decided to just post. I have a pullet whose breed is in question. I thought I was buying a sex link pullet but it's questionable now. I don't know the breeder, I just go her from a CraigsList seller. (be kind, I'm a total novice, but learning) I think she's 5 or 6 months old. In the past couple of weeks her comb & wattle have doubled in size and begun to turn red. She's larger than my EE that's laying. Her feet are yellow. She has a lot of green in her feathers and they are incredibly soft compared to the EE.

Do you think she's a JG, or do I just have to wait to see if she gets to 10 pounds?

Thanks!

Pics 1 & 2 are from last week, the comb & wattles are bigger now...

Pic 3 is seven weeks ago, when I got her. They said she was 4 months old, but weren't positive.....

That is BYC member mahalo4 - who I know has been working really hard on getting super nice quality Giants on his farm; I've dealt with him personally, and I believe him to be honest & trustworthy. These may be cull birds from some of his hatchings that he has sold due to them not being quite "up to par" for breeding stock - I'm unsure. But they don't, to me, look like good examples of the breed, I'm sorry to say. That doesn't mean they're not purebred, though - you should probably get with mahalo4 and discuss.

CarolynF - you say the bottoms of her feet are yellow?

To me, if she's a Jersey Giant, again, this is not a good example. They should have very long and flat backs - also, it's hard to tell, but it appears the angle of her back is not correct, either.

Again, it very well could be that she's purebred, but maybe hatchery stock (i.e., someone got her from a hatchery and bred what they got...so, I guess you could say they are from "a breeder," but they may simply be not the best conformation).

Remember to always ask lots of questions when buying purebred stock - ask where they got their starts, how long they have been in that breed, what they are working on in their flocks, etc. There's absolutley nothing wrong with buying someone's culls if that's what this bird is - absolutley nothing! But, I really woudl hope that breeders tell the buyers why they are selling...JMO.

Hi Wynette, thank you for the very fast response. Yes, her feet are yellow. There were no claims made about her breeding. As I said I thought I was getting a BSL and didn't know at the time what questions I should be asking or what I should be looking for. I was just very anxious to get chickens and trusted that it was a simple and straight forward purchase. I've learned SO much since then. She's a sweet bird and I'm just curious to see if I can figure out what she MIGHT be. Very possibly she's a cross. From what I've read she COULD be a BSL that's a cross between a Barred Rock and most any black rooster. Maybe HE was a JG.

I'm hoping she'll lay soon and that might provide one more clue. It's an on-going mystery.

Thanks again for your input.

Hi there,

These are my 2 Jerseys bought from a breeder at the same time. They both have hen looking bodies (same), but faces are SO different. Is one just maturing faster or could one be a cockerel just no tail feathers or differences in feathering yet. They are about 18 weeks. Thanks!!
