Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Thanks. I have two and they look just alike. Not sure the line, but probably hatchery stock parents. I hope the little rooster grows out nice, he has allot of purple sheen and brown coloring on all the black.

Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone could please pass on a link to Bobbi Porto website or how I may make contact with? I also live in Florida and would love to add some new blood to my JG flock. Thank you in advance for your help.

new question here.

We are going to a Poulrty show the first of next month and I'm filling out the entry form. My question is can I take my Blue Jersey Giant if the Blue color is not accepted by APA? I think the only color APA takes is Black and White. I have until tuesday of next week to get this in the mail. Would like to get it in my Monday.

Any help would be helpfull.

Soaring, you have some very nice birds there! I especially like the splash pullet with the guinea right behind her. I think you have some definite keepers there!!

I have been in close contact with the breeder of my last batch - they are now 20 weeks (I posted a pic a few pages back of one of them) and she has helped me with some really good insight as mine have been growing out. Seems the blues have a major tendency to have tails that are too long, with sickles either too long/high/sweeping or trailing. I'm going to concentrate mostly on my blues the next few years...they should look exactly like a good black in type, and they do not. The thing is, most that I am seeing do not. We need to remember that each variety (color) is the same breed, which I know sounds ridiculous...but, I think that many folks must be looking for different attributes in the blues than they do in the blacks. Either that, or folks are just keeping what hatches without exception.

It frustrates me, as I've been looking & looking for really good blues for a few years now. I "think" I have a good contender in this last hatch, we'll see what his progeny looks like!

Fewer than 1% of poultry owners are breeders or exhibitors. I think alot of it is that many people are simply looking for "BIG" chickens, and they do, indeed, just keep whatever hatches. That is fine, too. Nothing wrong with that.

I agree, it is difficult to find really nice Jersey Giants. Have you ever googled, "Jersey Giant images?" and then click on images. You will see lots of poor quality birds. However, you might see a few nice ones!

Good luck, Wynette!

Yup...I've done it and done it and done it.

For sure, there's nothing wrong with keeping everything that hatches - I didn't mean to sound snobby. Sorry if I came off that way as I'm most deifnitely not THAT person!

I'm to the point where we need to MAKE them (work with the best that we have and move forward from there)...there is good stock out there, what is always my hinderance is that I can't afford to have good ones shipped to me and most of the breeders I care to work with simply don't ship eggs. Sigh.
