Oh on the two pullets in question that we talked about. I'm taking both to a show clinic at msbears were a judge will go over them and tell me what if anything is wrong with them. They will be 7 months by then. I figure what better way to find out if they will make the cut or be culled from my flock.

Hi all on BYC JG thread. Our flock is growing up and were thinking about a little project. We are considering making this 5 month old our alpha roo for breeding.

Some questions that came into our minds factoring in what resources and time line we have...

1) Crowing - Are JG roosters noisy in general or is it a display of dominance as we will have younger roos free ranging around this breeding pen. He will be in a separated pen with 2-3 of his girlfriends.

2) Maturity for breeding - He does not show much interest in mounting yet but we have a couple of 5 month old RIR starting to chase several tail feathers. We don't plan on having him sir offsprings using his his mom/aunts or his sisters/cousins as we got all our varying age JGs from our local hatchery friend. He would probably be separated from the rest until we get a different line of JGs. We got our names on Wynette's JG list and it would probably be next winter before he will start mating. Is this too long to make a boy wait?

Appreciate any advice we can get as we are 1st timers.

txmel - yes, that's a cockerel. I would put him in the stew pot, he's got too many faults to use. Sad, decent splash are so hard to come by! His daddy's a SUPER nice boy, he would have come out of a very good blue Maria Hall gal. This is a perfect example of how you don't necessarily get exhibition quality out of two very typey birds. Darnit anyway!

wyan - is that rooster ill? He's holding his tail down as if he's not feeling well....

wyan, have you wormed your flocks? DE is a good "preventative" for external/internal parasites, but it most definitely would not clear an infestation (you know, I hate that word...it sounds so nasty, like you're not taking care of your chooks, but I sure don't mean it in that way) - I guess as a first step if this guy was mine, and especially since you've seen what MAY be a few worms in poo, I'd go ahead & worm them. YOu'll find a TON of information on BYC about this. I personally use Ivermectin Eprinex (a cattle wormer) as it works to rid both internal AND external parasites, except for tapes. Dosage is .5cc for a "regular sized" LF chicken; I give .75 - 1cc to a full grown Giant rooster or cockerel that's at least 12 lbs.

Hi. I was wondering if you would consider a Black JG Cockeral with 7 points to be SQ or would he be a PQ. Since Otherwise hes nice but I have two other roosters that are better on the comb and back size, with his yellow feet pads and back being really straight carrying his tail at a 45% angle.

Lofty, personally, I would never make a decision based on the comb. It should have 6 points, but an extra point would not be a DQ - it would be a fault, with a minimal point deduction.
